The Databridge team builds the interface between Hex and external data warehouses, as well as the platforms that power that interface. We’re responsible for everything from the foundational systems that connect to data warehouse and sync metadata, to search and retrieval of key metadata, to data governance features that meet the scale and organizational needs of our largest customers.
A few of the cool things we work on:
- Designing intuitive, full-stack, end-to-end solutions for user-based and role-based data access (via mechanisms like OAuth) that feel seamless in a product that supports collaboration.
- Optimizing search systems like Elasticsearch and LanceDB to ensure rapid indexing and retrieval, as well evaluating solutions to unlock new capabilities in these areas.
- Scaling infrastructure (in collaboration with our wonderful Infra team!) to meet the needs of our multitenant environments and our most massive deployments.
The following are examples of the kind of work you can expect in this role:
- Build and maintain robust, well-documented APIs and interfaces that other teams rely on for syncing and retrieving data across Hex’s internal systems.
- Find solutions to highly complex problems that prioritize enterprise demands and a great product experience - e.g. caching across OAuth connections.
- Propose and implement designs for well-architected, scalable systems in collaboration with the broader Hex team
- Investigate and incorporate modern technologies in compute, caching, and storage to push the boundaries of our platform.
- Own full stack product changes end to end that support the smoothest possible configuration and usage of these features for customers.
- 5+ years of software engineering experience.
- Experience working in a remote-first team and strong communication skills in this context.
- A passion for technical collaboration, including RFCs, code reviews, and architecture discussions.
- Deep interest in the data space, with a love for shipping great products and empowering end users.
- A strategic mindset that balances business and product goals with engineering excellence. You understand tradeoffs between user value and technical complexity, and operate pragmatically.
- You’re up to speed with the latest in search and retrieval. Detailed knowledge of one of Postgres, Elastic, Opensearch, or recent vector databases is a bonus.
- A willingness to make changes anywhere in the stack to land impact.
- An ability to lead initiatives while mentoring and collaborating with fellow engineers.
Our product is a web-based notebook and app authoring platform. Our frontend is built with Typescript and React, using a combination of Apollo GraphQL and Redux for managing application state and data. On the backend, we also use Typescript to power an Express/Apollo GraphQL server that interacts with Postgres, Redis, and Kubernetes to manage our database and Python kernels. Our backend is tightly integrated with our infrastructure and CI/CD, where we use a combination of Terraform, Helm, and AWS to deploy and maintain our stack.
