Contract Role

About YLD:

Everything we do is to empower our clients to move forward. Our purpose is to help our clients develop the capabilities they need to outperform their competitors. Our success is a consequence of ensuring our clients are successful. Our company is built on extraordinary people; we aim to attract, inspire, develop and retain them. YLD is a software engineering and design consultancy; we create digital capabilities for our clients that last beyond our engagement. We have offices in London, Lisbon, and Porto.

About the role:

We're looking for an experienced FinOps Engineer to drive cloud cost optimisation across our client's extensive Azure infrastructure. You'll work directly with engineering teams to identify cost-saving opportunities, implement optimisation strategies, and establish sustainable financial operations practices.

About you:

You're a technically strong Software and Infrastructure engineer who can bridge the gap between engineering excellence and cost efficiency. You understand that cloud optimization isn't just about cutting costs — it's about maximizing value and enabling teams to innovate within sustainable budgets. You thrive in highly collaborative environments and are confident engaging with multiple teams to drive progress. You’re thoughtful, structured, and proactive in your approach to delivery.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will look like this:
  • Analyse Azure spending patterns across multiple services including Cosmos DB, App Services, Functions, and data platforms;
  • Partner with engineering teams to identify and implement cost optimisation opportunities without compromising performance or reliability
  • Develop and maintain cost monitoring dashboards and automated alerts for budget tracking
  • Review and optimize Azure resource configurations, including RU provisioning, App Service Plans, and compute scaling strategies
  • Create cost allocation models and chargeback mechanisms for different teams and projects
  • Conduct regular cost optimisation reviews and provide actionable recommendations
  • Up-skill teams on FinOps best practices and Azure cost management tools
  • Support migration initiatives by providing cost impact analysis and optimisation strategies
You’ll have the following skills and experience:
  • Strong understanding of Azure services and pricing models, particularly:
    • Azure Cosmos DB (RU provisioning, throughput models)
    • Azure VNET and Network Security Groups (understanding network topology impacts on data transfer costs)
    • Azure Front Door and Traffic Manager (for CDN and traffic routing optimization)
    • App Service Plans and Azure Functions
    • Azure data services (Databricks, Data Factory)
    • Compute and storage optimisation
  • Experience with Azure Cost Management, Azure Advisor, and related FinOps tools
  • Proficiency in PowerShell for automation, C# and .NET, as you'll be working with development teams using this stack and creating automation tools, and with Linux as a potential deployment target
  • Understanding of infrastructure-as-code principles and CI/CD pipelines (experience with Octopus is a plus)
  • Ability to create clear cost reports and present findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience implementing cost optimisation strategies such as:
    • Reserved instances and savings plans
    • Resource right-sizing
    • Scaling policies
    • Lifecycle management for storage and backups
  • Knowledge of FinOps frameworks and methodologies
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
You’ll be:
  • Self-motivated, proactive and constantly looking for ways to improve and develop yourself
  • A good communicator, both in writing and verbally – able to explain technical ideas in business-friendly language
  • Detail oriented
  • A strong problem-solver who balances innovation with pragmatism
  • Comfortable working in collaborative, cross-functional teams
  • Passionate about diversity, equity and fairness
What you’ll get in return:
  • The chance to work with a forward-thinking, ethical, and fun group of people and to develop and grow your skills in a fast-moving business.
Our typical Recruitment Process looks like this:
  • 1st Interview with someone from the Talent team (30/45 mins)
  • Technical Interview with our Senior Developers (1h30)
  • Meet and discussion with a Client Partner (15/30 mins)
We live and breathe our values, and know you will too:
  • Growing every day
  • Including everyone
  • Relationships built on honesty and ethics
  • Inspiring solutions
  • Winning together

We’re an equal-opportunity employer and value diversity of all kinds. We don’t discriminate based on race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, pregnancy or maternity, age, marital status, or disability status. We also believe in work-life balance and offer flexible working around our core hours.

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
