About the Role

Solo and small law firm owners rarely have the luxury of a full finance team. That is where you come in. As a Fractional Controller at HOW TO MANAGE A SMALL LAW FIRM, you will serve as the financial backbone for a portfolio of up to 45 solo law firm owners enrolled in our program.

You will not just crunch numbers. You will teach attorneys how to read and actually use their financial reports, hold them accountable to their goals, and help them build the financial foundation their firms need to grow. You will work alongside a team of Fractional Management Advisors serving clients across CEO, COO, and CFO functions.

This is a coaching role as much as it is an accounting role. If you thrive at translating complex financial concepts into plain English and love helping business owners connect the dots between their numbers and their goals, this position was made for you.

What You Will Do

• Lead monthly one-on-one financial analysis calls with your assigned client portfolio, building their financial acumen over time.

• Facilitate group calls and webinars, fielding live questions on financial controls, reporting, and business strategy.

• Establish and teach a core set of key financial reports, then coach clients on using them as strategic decision-making tools.

• Build and track KPIs, dashboards, and scorecards that go beyond traditional accounting outputs.

• Coach clients through resistance and roadblocks, helping them take the actions that will move their firm forward.

• Respond to client calls and emails within 24 hours, Monday through Friday.

• Maintain detailed notes on all client interactions using our software, documenting progress, challenges, and advice.

• Contribute to the company knowledge base through articles, tools, process documentation, or training content.

• Attend weekly team meetings and participate in ongoing training and development.

• Provide regular progress reports on your assigned clients to your manager.

• Make yourself available for some after-5pm EST slots to accommodate clients across time zones.

Who You Are

The ideal candidate thinks beyond debits and credits. You are someone who has seen the inside of entrepreneurial companies, worked closely with small business owners or family businesses, and understands the difference between running a financially sound business and simply keeping the books.

You bring:

• Progressive accounting and finance experience, with a track record of advancing into Controller or comparable leadership roles.

• Experience managing people, departments, or teams, with the ability to coach, mentor, and hold others accountable.

• A strong command of financial statements, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial controls.

• Experience building dashboards, KPIs, scorecards, and management reporting tools (not just standard accounting reports).

• The ability to clearly articulate how your work has moved the needle, whether by increasing profits, reducing costs, improving cash flow, or strengthening financial performance.

• Experience facilitating meetings, workshops, presentations, or training sessions.

• The communication skills to explain financial concepts in plain English and adapt your approach based on each client's level of financial sophistication.

• Comfort operating outside a traditional accounting lane, including contributing to HR matters, legal liaison situations, special projects, or advisory initiatives.

Bonus points if you have:

• Worked in entrepreneurial, rapid-growth, or startup environments.

• Supported professional service firms or family-owned businesses.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
