Our clinics are designed with pets and people in mind: warm, friendly, and highly sniffable. We balance this design with a strong focus on technology, all built in-house, which means we can easily innovate our systems to improve the veterinary team, pet, and client experience.

Role Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and proactive Controller to lead the financial accounting function for a fast-growing animal health organization. This role will oversee all day-to-day accounting activities, ensure strong internal controls, maintain compliance, and partner closely with operations to drive disciplined financial performance across ~50 clinics.

The Controller will manage a remote accounting team, implement scalable processes and systems, and ensure timely, accurate financial reporting for monthly close, audits, and lender requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Close

  • Own month-end and year-end close processes; ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency
  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements and variance analyses
  • Maintain accounting policies and ensure adherence to GAAP
  • Coordinate annual audit and tax filings with external auditors

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Strengthen internal controls around revenue, patient payments, payroll, P2P, inventory, and controlled substances
  • Implement procedures that ensure proper segregation of duties across clinics and support center
  • Maintain compliance with state/federal regulations and lender/board reporting requirements

Clinic Operations Support

  • Partner with Operations, Procurement, and HR to ensure proper clinic-level accounting
  • Monitor clinic performance trends and identify financial risks/opportunities
  • Ensure expense accuracy, timely accruals, and alignment with operational workflows

Systems & Process Optimization

  • Drive continuous improvement of accounting systems (e.g., NetSuite, Coupa, payroll, inventory tools)
  • Standardize workflows across 50 sites to support scale and rapid growth
  • Lead automation and data integrity initiatives to reduce manual effort and increase visibility

Team Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a remote accounting team (AP, AR, General Accounting)
  • Set clear expectations, establish KPIs, and build a high-performance, service-oriented culture
  • Recruit and build talent as the organization expands

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA strongly preferred)
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, at least 3 years managing multi-site operations
  • Experience in healthcare, veterinary, or consumer services strongly preferred
  • Deep knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and operational accounting best practices
  • Strong systems experience (NetSuite or similar ERP required)
  • Exceptional attention to detail, analytical strength, and accountability
  • Ability to communicate effectively with operators, clinicians, and senior leadership
  • Thrives in a high-growth environment with evolving processes and priorities

Success Characteristics

  • Ownership mindset with urgency and follow-through
  • Trusted partner to operations — proactive, collaborative, solutions-oriented
  • Builder mentality — embraces change and scales processes
  • High integrity and commitment to accuracy and compliance

What We Offer

  • Remote-first culture with flexibility
  • Mission-driven work improving care for pets and families
  • Opportunity to shape a finance function within a rapidly growing business

And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
