Corporate Counsel - Privacy

Why We Have This Role

Qualtrics is hiring a Corporate Counsel focused on privacy to lead and scale our global data protection program as we continue to grow and innovate. This role exists to embed pragmatic, business-focused privacy advice into product development, commercial contracting, incident response, and regulatory engagement. We need a trusted legal partner who can move quickly in ambiguous situations, build practical compliance solutions, and help the company balance legal risk with business velocity. The right person will own key privacy processes and documentation while mentoring more junior attorneys and paralegals and partnering cross-functionally to drive consistent, defensible practices. Ultimately, this role ensures we protect our customers, maintain regulatory compliance, and enable Qualtrics to deliver exceptional experiences securely and responsibly.

How You’ll Find Success

Success in this role is about more than just legal acumen; it's about becoming a trusted, pragmatic business partner who drives results across a wide range of critical legal functions. We are looking for a skilled lawyer who thrives on complexity and ownership. You will succeed by demonstrating excellence in the following areas:
  • Ownership of the Privacy Program: You don't just identify issues; you build the solutions. You will take full responsibility for our global privacy compliance framework, from DPIAs, DTIAs and ROPAs etc.

  • High-Stakes Navigation: You thrive in ambiguity. You provide clear, actionable paths forward that balance legal risk with business velocity.

  • Becoming a Go-To Expert: You will quickly become a highly proficient and go-to resource for the company on privacy matters.

  • Pragmatic and Trusted Partnership: You will build deep trust across the organization by being a responsive, helpful, and solutions-oriented partner. With a high EQ, you will translate complex legal requirements into actionable business guidance. Success means you are consistently sought out by internal clients who value your pragmatic advice and enjoy working with you.

  • Strategic Business Acumen: You will move beyond purely legal advice by developing a sophisticated understanding of our company's products, organization, and risk tolerance. Your counsel will be not just legally sound but commercially astute, helping the business navigate challenges and achieve its goals in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.

  • Mentorship and Team Collaboration: As a key member of the team, you will contribute to a positive and inclusive environment. You will become a helpful mentor to more junior members of the Legal team and a respected advisor to colleagues across the business.

How You’ll Grow

You’ll know you’re doing a phenomenal job when:
  • You are the company's go-to expert, autonomously managing complex privacy and compliance matters.
  • You translate complex legal matters into clear, actionable advice that empowers confident business decisions.
  • You are a trusted, pragmatic partner, proactively sought out by teams across the business to help them navigate challenges.

Things You’ll Do

As a key member of our legal team, you will be responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of complex legal matters. Your core responsibilities will include:
  • Privacy and Data Protection Laws: Advising on global privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), managing our data privacy compliance program, and developing and maintaining key resources like our privacy policies. You will be expected to remain up-to-date on relevant legal and regulatory developments across your areas of responsibility to ensure the team can provide robust and forward-looking legal advice.

  • Privacy by Design: Partner with Product and Engineering teams to integrate "Privacy by Design" principles into the development of new features and services.

  • Contract Escalation POC: Act as point of escalation on customer, vendor and partner data processing agreements (DPAs) and other agreements.

  • Incident Response: Provide legal support for incident response involving privacy considerations, including notification obligations.

  • Data Subject Requests and Regulatory Inquiries: Manage responses to privacy-related inquiries from data subjects and government regulators.

  • Growth Opportunities: This role primarily focuses on privacy, with significant opportunities for growth to support in additional areas such as trade compliance (export controls and sanctions), compliance, and bankruptcy.

  • Process Improvement and Legal Resources: Developing and implementing processes to increase the overall effectiveness of the Legal team and maintaining a repository of legal resources, templates, and training materials for the business.

What We’re Looking For On Your Resume

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree or equivalent international qualification.
  • 4-9 years of experience in a similar or relevant role at a top law firm or company.
  • Deep knowledge of global privacy regulations and a proven ability to manage complex privacy programs in a fast-paced environment.
  • Professional privacy certifications such as CIPP/E, CIPP/US, or CIPM are strongly preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity and adapting to shifting priorities.
  • Solution-oriented mindset able to work with teams to ensure they are able to accomplish their objectives while still meeting standards.
  • Ability to manage and advise senior leadership.

What You Should Know About This Team

  • The Legal team at Qualtrics is a hard-working, fun-loving, and dynamic group. We focus on solving problems and empowering our business teams to run, not walk.
  • We are always pragmatic—protecting the company from risks that really matter and never slowing it down over issues that are only theoretical.
  • We get the opportunity to work with every department in the company as well as outside counsel, vendors, partners, and (most meaningfully) customers.
  • We strive to avoid pretentiousness and instead focus on working hard, having fun, and delivering results.

Our Team’s Favorite Perks and Benefits

  • Team cohesion is deeply important to us - we have frequent office events and regular team activities
  • Qualtrics Experience Program - $1,800 for an experience of your choosing (eligible after a year)
  • We take pride in our office design aimed at fostering creativity, in an open and collaborative workspace
  • 30 paid days off - 15 Vacation Days + 5 Personal Days + 10 Holiday Closures (additional after a year)
  • On top of standard benefits package (medical employees and their families, dental, vision, life insurance, etc), we provide free lunches every work day, snacks, and drinks
The Qualtrics Hybrid Work Model: Our hybrid work model is elegantly simple: we all gather in the office three days a week; Mondays and Thursdays, plus one day selected by your organizational leader. These purposeful in-person days in thoughtfully designed offices help us do our best work and harness the power of collaboration and innovation. For the rest of the week, work where you want, owning the integration of work and life. #hybrid

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
