Role Description

As a Dropbox Data Science intern in the Customer Strategy Organization (CSO) you are part of a top-notch learning experience with data scientists from all backgrounds. You’ll have a dedicated Dropboxer by your side, mentoring you every step of the way.

Our goal is to create a robust and impactful learning experience. You can expect to learn how to apply modern data science principles across our revenue, marketing and product teams. We're all about feedback, so anticipate continual guidance refining your approach. And while you're forging your path, we're here to ensure you bond with like-minded interns, discover mentors, and lay the bricks for an expansive professional network.

We will work with you to accommodate your school end and start dates culminating in a minimum of a 12-week long internship.

In this role, you will analyze a wide range of data sources, including customer surveys, support tickets, call transcripts, and product usage data, to identify trends, insights, and areas of opportunity. You will gain hands-on experience applying statistical methods, natural language processing (NLP) techniques and Large Language Models (LLM) to real-world customer problems. You are a self-starter with a strong affinity for problem-solving and a solid foundation in data analysis and statistical concepts. You bring a curious, analytical mindset and are eager to learn and experiment with new tools and approaches.

Responsibilities
  • Apply natural language processing (NLP) techniques to identify trends and patterns in unstructured text data such as surveys, support tickets, and call transcripts.
  • Develop and experiment with solutions using large language models (LLMs) to help automate and scale analytical processes.
  • Use machine learning and statistical methods to extract actionable insights from large, multi-dimensional customer behavior and usage datasets.
  • Communicate complex analytical concepts to non-technical audiences through clear written and verbal communication, supported by compelling data visualizations.
  • Document, gather, and share best practices and insights within the team to help promote a data-driven culture at Dropbox.
  • Collaborate proactively with stakeholders across Customer Experience and Success to understand business needs and support accurate and relevant analytical deliverables.
Requirements
  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate (sophomore or above) or graduate student, with an expected graduation date of 2027 or later, majoring in Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
  • Familiarity with data analysis workflows and foundational machine learning concepts.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, with experience using data science libraries such as pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, or similar.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with SQL and/or querying large datasets.
  • Basic familiarity with natural language processing (NLP) techniques and models (e.g., BERT or similar transformer-based models).
  • Familiarity with large language models (LLMs), including prompt design and basic evaluation techniques.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
