Think of your favorite book from childhood. Got it? Great. Now, that warm, joyful feeling you have right now—that’s what we do. Literati is a modern children’s book company focused on helping kids fall in love with reading at every age and stage. We make it easy to find great books through our school book fairs, school store fundraising platform, and book clubs using a unique mix of expert curation and data science. We’re on a mission to help parents ignite a love of learning and a love of life.

As a Data Scientist focusing on inventory and personalization, you'll directly influence which books enter our collection and how they reach children's hands. You'll develop and deploy machine learning models to optimize our inventory decisions, personalize book selections for schools, and predict inventory movement.

This is a full-stack data science position where you'll own problems from ideation through production and validation, building solutions that drive measurable business outcomes.

To be equitable to all Literatians, we have set compensation and a non-negotiation policy- we don't think a person’s pay should be determined by how comfortable they negotiate. As a result, we like to be transparent and up-front about the compensation. When we make an offer, we can provide options so that employees can choose between compensation packages that prioritize salary or equity. The salary band for this role will be between $150,000 - $200,000. This position is classified as exempt and is not eligible for overtime pay.

This Position is for Individual Applicants Only; No Third-Party Applications Will Be Considered

REQUIREMENTS

  • Advanced degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Operations Research, or a related quantitative field

  • 2+ years of experience using the tools of data science to solve impactful business problems

  • Passion for making a positive impact on children's education

WE’D LOVE TO SEE

  • Experience developing, deploying, and maintaining production ML systems

  • Knowledge of retail business models or inventory optimization

  • Strong ability to make decisions with complex or uncertain objectives

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop ML models to identify optimal books for our inventory, personalize selections for different schools, and forecast inventory levels

  • Take data science projects from concept to production, including experimentation and iteration

  • Identify new opportunities to drive business impact through data science

  • Champion best practices in algorithm engineering and machine learning operations

We are dedicated to cultivating and preserving a culture of inclusion and connectedness that sees, reflects, welcomes, and celebrates the innovation and talent of a diverse array of people. We seek people with drive and a touch of alchemy. We also recognize that some people—particularly underrepresented groups, women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+—may not be comfortable applying to a position unless they meet 100% of the qualifications. Even if your experience isn’t a precise match for the role, we highly encourage you to apply. And if your career has taken you to some spectacular (or spectacularly strange) places, we love a good story.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
