Head of Data Science

At Render, we're dedicated to building a powerful and user-friendly cloud that simplifies hosting for every developer and team. Our platform supports a wide range of applications, from simple static sites to complex multi-service architectures. By offering the flexibility of traditional cloud providers without their associated complexity and maintenance challenges, we enable our users to concentrate on product development instead of managing servers.

Our team is a diverse and talented group addressing universal challenges of software development. We prioritize rapid iteration while maintaining a strong focus on user experience, craft, and reliability. This commitment drives us to improve continually. Our organic, product-led growth has attracted over 2 million developers, with 150,000+ new developers signing up every month. Our customers trust Render for our reliable and scalable cloud with enterprise-grade capabilities, fully managed datastores, and advanced security and compliance features.

In January 2025, we reached a significant milestone by raising $80 million in Series C financing, bringing our total funding to $157M. This investment enables us to accelerate our vision of making cloud infrastructure both powerful and intuitive while catering to the evolving needs of the AI era.

Applying to Render:

We're seeking candidates who possess high integrity, humility, and an insatiable drive to learn. Through reasoned discussions and continuous feedback, we strive to improve both individually and collectively. We foster an environment of mutual trust and respect, empowering effective debate to achieve the best outcomes for our customers and team.

Our interview process is unique to each role, and we value the candidate experience just as much as our customer experience. We hope your conversations with us reflect a thoughtful process that is illuminative, enjoyable, and respectful of your time.

About the Role:

We’re looking for a visionary and hands-on Head of Data Science to join our team. In this role, you’ll define and scale the data function at Render from the ground up—setting the strategy, building a world-class team, and embedding data deeply into every decision we make.

You will work closely with leaders across Product, Engineering, Marketing, and GTM to shape product strategy, surface key insights, and drive operational excellence. This is a unique opportunity to lead a highly impactful function at a pivotal stage of our growth.

You will lead by example, guiding the work of other data scientists while personally contributing to exploratory analysis, experiment design, causal inference, and data infrastructure improvements.

What You’ll Do:

  • Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing data science team across analytics, experimentation, and statistical modeling.

  • Personally drive and guide impactful IC work, from ad hoc analysis to ML-based modeling projects.

  • Create and evangelize best practices for data reliability, reproducibility, and documentation.

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to define a long term data strategy

  • Own and scale the Data Science function across product, growth, and go-to-market, aligning with company OKRs and strategic bets.

  • Hire, lead, and mentor a world-class team of data scientists and analysts; build a high-trust, high-impact culture grounded in intellectual rigor and bias for action.

  • Define and communicate Render’s long-term data strategy and architecture in partnership with Engineering and Product leadership.

  • Drive strategic insight across the org: from pricing and packaging to product adoption, conversion, and customer segmentation.

  • Promote data fluency across Render through tools, dashboards, and processes that empower every team to make smarter decisions

  • Provide actionable insights about our users such as how they work, how they discover features, and which obstacles they might run into on the platform.

  • Contribute toward initiatives to enhance the reliability and accuracy of our data infrastructure and processes.

What We’re Looking For:

  • 8+ years of experience in data science, with 4+ years in a leadership role scaling teams and delivering cross-functional impact.

  • A strong foundation in statistics, causal inference, experimentation, and modeling techniques.

  • Fluency in SQL and Python; experience with modern data stacks (e.g. BigQuery, dbt, Metabase, Mixpanel).

  • Track record of influencing executive-level decisions through clear storytelling and analytical depth.

  • Demonstrated ability to scale data functions from zero-to-one and beyond in fast-paced, product-led environments.

  • Impact mindset: you're excited to wear multiple hats, move fast, and help define what “great” looks like.

  • Bonus: experience in B2B SaaS, cloud infrastructure, developer tools, or growth analytics.

Our Data Stack:

  • Multiple sources of data (e.g. Segment, HubSpot, back-end data in Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL)

  • ETL to BigQuery with Stitch

  • Dbt layer for data transformation

  • Analysis and reporting with Metabase and MixPanel

Some projects you might work on:

  • Define the north-star metrics that inform Render’s product and GTM decisions

  • Design experiments to measure the impact of new AI infrastructure features

  • Partner with Product and Engineering to identify patterns in developer usage that drive retention and expansion

  • Build systems to detect platform abuse and ensure developer trust and safety

  • Architect a modern analytics layer to support company-wide self-service insights

Benefits:

  • Our openings span more than one career level. The starting salary for this role is between $250,400 - $344,300. The provided salary depends on many factors, such as work experience and transferable skills, business needs and impact, and market demands.

  • The opportunity is also eligible for equity with early exercise options and extended exercise windows.

  • 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave for all parents to bond with a newly born, adopted, or fostered child, plus an additional 5 days off during your first few weeks back. We will work with you to create a supportive plan of return.

  • Long-term disability, life insurance, and 401K plans.

  • 100% employer-paid medical coverage and 99% employer-paid dental and vision coverage for you and a dependent. FSAs available too.

  • Monthly wellness stipend

  • Monthly mental health stipend

  • Monthly commuter stipend for Bay Area employees, and a home office stipend for remote employees

  • Continuous learning benefits & related support.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
