The Principal Controls Engineer performs broad system maintenance and support to resolve unique matters. Leads large scale projects using internal and external resources. Leads development and implementation of policies and procedures. Effectively interacts with other internal and external teams, including the design engineering, site engineering, regional operations teams, onsite support vendors and consultants on projects, policies and procedures to resolve unique controls engineering matters. Mentors engineers within the Engineering and Site Operations job family groups (e.g. IBX Engineering).

Responsibilities

System Operation and Work Practices

  • Expert operating knowledge of control systems to include advanced diagnostics and repairs

  • Ability to apply knowledge of Equinix process and procedure and industry standards to resolve non-routine issues

  • Works with vendors to identify and resolve hardware and software issues with vendors’ products which affect Equinix operation

  • Utilizes safe working practices at an expert level (e.g. can apply procedure for lockout/tagout, can explain MSDS, etc.)

  • Evaluates and assures the safe working practices of others

  • Reviews and recommends work practice guidelines and policy

  • Interacts with other engineering disciplines

Problem Solving

  • Consistently solves complex, cross-functional issues requiring independent action and a high degree of initiative to resolve

  • Makes recommendations for system level enhancements to eliminate potential problems

  • Tests suitability of components for deployments

Technical Expertise

  • Has expert controls system knowledge

  • Is a subject matter expert to others in and outside of the group

  • Extensive knowledge of multiple facets of controls engineering

  • Develops and executes projects

  • Reviews budget and scope, calculates savings pertaining to control system replacement projects

Assess Adherence to Policy

  • Assures adherence to approved standards and policy through review of documentation, support in commissioning activities and IBX physicals with respect to adherence to standards

  • Develops high level reporting / summaries of policy compliance information

Qualifications

  • 10+ years in control system design, operations, maintenance, and project planning with emphasis & special focus on controls

  • Bachelor Degree

Attended meetings:

  • Weekly internal DCOS-ITR project meeting

  • Project OAC calls as needed

  • Integrator meeting as needed as requested by project Design Manager

  • Design consultant meetings as requested by project Design Manager

  • Page turns (Schematic Design and Detailed Design)

Phase 2: Schematic Design

  • Review and comment on Schematic Design submittals (Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Telecom)

  • Identify all assets, devices, and equipment that require integration and submittal review.

Phase 4: Detailed Design

  • Review and comment on Detail Design submittals (Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Telecom, Controls)

  • Panel Locations

  • Instrument Locations

  • Network switch locations, port count, and VLAN port configuration

  • Panel instrument I/O layout

  • Network diagrams (Primary, Secondary, and Device Layer)

  • Data Hall instrument location drawings

  • Mechanical P&IDs

  • Equipment points lists

Phase 6: Construction

  • Review and comment on RFIs

  • Review and comment on submittals OFCI and CFCI

  • Attend SFAT as needed

  • Review and comment on SOO

  • Review and comment on test scripts

Miscellaneous:

  • Review of DCOS DCFs

  • Support monthly DCOS GDS management & Improvement support

  • DCOS Information awareness training as required

  • Global Legislation Compliancy support

  • Engage and deliver with our Enterprise and Functional Goals to achieve our Organization Priorities

The United States targeted pay range for this position in the following location is / locations are:
• San Francisco, CA / Bay Area: $157,000 to $235,000 per year
• California (Non-SF/Bay Area), Connecticut, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Washington state: $150,000 to $224,000 per year
• Colorado, Nevada, Rhode Island: $136,000 to $204,000 per year
Our pay ranges reflect the minimum and maximum target for new hire pay for the full-time position determined by role, level, and location. Individual pay is based on additional factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education and/or training.
This position may be offered in other locations. Your recruiter can share more about the specific pay range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
The targeted pay range listed reflects the base pay only and does not include bonus, equity, or benefits. Employees are eligible for bonus, and equity may be offered depending on the position.
