Who we are

Subtotal is a fast-growing, seed-stage B2B software startup helping brands take ownership of the customer experience in their largest channel: retail. We connect shoppers, brands, and retailers through a modern data platform that makes retail purchases visible and actionable.

We’re early, building fast, and looking for a Designer to help shape how our product and brand come to life.

The role

This is a hands-on design role spanning both brand/marketing design and product design. You’ll work closely with our founding team to design product experiences in Figma while also bringing our brand to life across marketing channels.

You’ll split your time between product work (UI, flows, prototyping) and brand/marketing work (visual assets, storytelling, campaigns).

What you’ll do
  • Create marketing and brand assets (e.g., landing pages, social graphics, decks, event materials)

  • Design and prototype product experiences in Figma, including user flows, wireframes, and UI components

  • Collaborate with engineering to translate product designs into shipped features

  • Contribute to and help maintain design systems and reusable components

  • Create clear visual storytelling through diagrams, flows, and illustrations

  • Support content marketing with strong visual design

  • Iterate on UX and UI across the product based on feedback and testing

  • Jump in on ad-hoc design projects across product, marketing, and operations

What we’re looking for
  • Senior in college or recent graduate (design, HCI, or related field preferred)

  • Experience designing and prototyping in Figma

  • A strong portfolio (website, Behance, or PDF) showcasing design work

  • Solid design fundamentals, including typography, layout, hierarchy, alignment, and spacing

  • Understanding of core design principles (contrast, repetition, hierarchy, etc.)

  • Strong visual taste and attention to detail

  • Comfort using AI tools to support design workflows, ideation, and rapid iteration

  • Interest in both product design and brand/marketing design

  • Passion for visual collaboration, diagramming, and simplifying complex ideas

  • Ability to learn the product and design within real constraints

  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment

  • Organized, proactive, and willing to take ownership

  • A bias toward action and learning by doing

Nice to have (but not required)
  • Experience designing for marketing channels (web, social, paid ads, email)

  • Familiarity with SaaS or data-heavy products

  • Experience working with engineers or understanding basic front-end concepts

  • Experience with motion, prototyping tools, or micro-interactions

What we offer
  • Competitive compensation

  • Meaningful equity

  • Fully paid health insurance for you and your family

  • Remote work, with occasional in-person onsites

  • The opportunity to see your designs shipped across both product and brand

If you want to design real product experiences and shape how a company presents itself to the world, we’d love to hear from you.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
