Director, Content Accessibility

College Board – Learning & Assessment

Location: This is a remote role. Candidates who live near CB offices have the option of being fully remote or hybrid (Tuesday and Wednesday in office). All CB employees are required to occasionally travel to meet in person for business purposes.

Role Type: This is a full-time position

About the Team

The Content Accessibility team at College Board has the privilege and responsibility of ensuring that College Board assessments are accessible for individuals with disabilities. Our work is both specialized and broad: we work with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to write and review image descriptions, consult with technology teams to improve accessibility supports in authoring tools, and collaborate with accessibility and accommodations specialists across the organization to ensure test content meets policy and the needs of test-takers. We not only advocate for universal design, we live it.

About the Opportunity

As a Director, Content Accessibility, you coach a team of writers and reviewers who bridge the gap between students who use assistive technology to take College Board assessments and the makers of College Board assessments. By bridging that gap, your team ensures every test question meets accessibility guidelines.

Your attitude is can-do: you write and review image descriptions and evaluate caption tracks, you construct reader scripts and braille maps, you apply headings when the content requires them. Moreover, you take on the team’s most complex and high-stakes work yourself. You do the work because leading by example helps the team excel. Ultimately, in Content Accessibility, everything you do is focused on one goal: ensuring College Board assessments are accessible so that all students, no matter their ability, can show what they know and can do. You can say with confidence that the work of your team is a primary reason College Board is an industry leader in accessible testing.

In this role, you will:

Lead and develop a team (30%)

  • Lead a team of four specialists responsible for the accessibility of assessment content across all College Board assessments.
  • Own day-to-day direction for the team. Assign and balance workloads, set priorities across competing program deadlines, and adjust plans as schedules shift, in partnership with the Senior Director and program leads.
  • Track and manage progress to goals, and provide coaching and support to ensure team members meet and exceed goals, remain engaged, and contribute meaningfully to our mission.
  • Cultivate an inclusive and high achieving culture that enables all team members to live out College Board’s Operating Principles.
  • Embody College Board’s Manager Expectations in your work.
  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, and training, and help shape team roles and structure as needs evolve.
  • Conduct regular check-ins and reviews and coach team members through feedback, professional development plans, and stretch assignments.

Be an expert practitioner (40%)

  • Write accessible test content (including image descriptions, reader scripts, and braille transcription notes), maintaining the highest standards of quality and care, for College Board assessments. Personally adopt the hardest cases for yourself.
  • Review and remediate test content to conform to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), ensuring all tests meet Section 504 and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. Adapt strategically when content and standards don’t easily align.
  • Act as the team's authority on accessible-content standards, making final calls on edge cases when guidance is unclear or absent.
  • Review and remediate test-adjacent content (e.g., research studies, scoring guidelines) to conform to WCAG, ensuring all publications meet Section 504 and ADA requirements.
  • Set priorities for and maintain image description guidelines, authoring standards and practices (e.g., for mode transformations), documentation, presentations, and tools (e.g., user personas).
  • Lead quality-control, accessibility, and usability reviews of tests and applications, identifying patterns and root causes rather than one-off errors.
  • Maintain advanced proficiency in authoring tools and assistive technology, and advise the team on best practices.

Shape strategy, standards, and cross-functional practice (30%)

  • Contribute to Content Accessibility strategy and long-term planning as part of the team's leadership group, and lead execution of initiatives within your team's scope.
  • Synthesize accessibility research, web standards, and user-experience findings into clear evidence-based recommendations to improve tooling, processes, and authoring standards. Present and advocate for those recommendations to program and organization leadership.
  • Represent Content Accessibility, including the team’s aims, standards, constraints, and risk considerations, in planning conversations with program, product, and technology teams. Ensure accessibility is built into all processes, tools, and assessments.
  • Educate and mentor others about universal design, accessibility, and accommodations, such as through presentations and trainings.
  • Drive pilots of new tools, workflows, and technologies (including AI) that improve the quality, efficiency, or accessibility of test content.
  • Lead cross-team projects or serve on them as the accessibility subject matter expert.

About You

To qualify for this role, you must have:

  • 6+ years of experience in accessibility or accommodations-focused roles, technical writing, or assessment content writing, with at least 4 years specifically in accessibility or accommodations-related work (e.g., accessibility specialist, inclusive designer, Section 508 compliance analyst)
  • Experience leading people or work, such as supervising, mentoring, training, or leading projects.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with demonstrated experience writing or editing (e.g., technical writer or editor).
  • A strategic and inclusive leadership style: you set clear priorities, build effective team structures, plan for future needs, and foster a culture of belonging.
  • A proven ability to drive performance and growth: you set high expectations, deliver real-time, evidence-based feedback, and coach team members to take smart risks, stretch their skills, and achieve meaningful impact.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, including facilitating meetings and presenting remotely and in-person to leaders and cross-functional audiences.
  • Demonstrated success handling complex, ambiguous, or high-stakes work with sound judgment and autonomy.
  • Adept problem-solving skills, including using data to inform decisions and actions.
  • Proven ability to build relationships and influence others to action.
  • Experience creating or maintaining accessibility standards or guidelines.
  • Fluency in web-content accessibility (WCAG, ARIA) and/or universal design.
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills and the proven ability to move forward multiple projects in concert, both independently and as a member of the team
  • Outstanding curiosity about emerging trends and best practices in web standards and accessibility
  • Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC) certification or Web Accessibility Specialist (WAS) certification preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • The ability to travel 1–3 times a year to College Board offices or on behalf of College Board business

All roles at College Board require:

  • A passion for expanding educational and career opportunities and mission-driven work
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm for emerging technologies, with a willingness to experiment with and adopt new AI-driven solutions and comfort with learning and applying new digital tools independently and proactively.
  • Clear and concise communication skills, written and verbal
  • A learner's mindset and a commitment to growth: welcoming diverse perspectives, giving and receiving timely, respectful feedback, and continuously improving through iterative learning and user input.
  • A drive for impact and excellence: solving complex problems, making data-informed decisions, prioritizing what matters most, and continuously improving through learning, user input, and external benchmarking.
  • A collaborative and empathetic approach: working across differences, fostering trust, and contributing to a culture of shared success
  • Authorization to work in the United States

About Our Process

  • Application review will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. This role is expected to accept applications for a minimum of 5 business days.
  • While the hiring process may vary, it generally includes: resume and application submission, recruiter phone/video screen, hiring manager interview, performance exercise, a panel interview, a conversation with leadership and reference checks.
