As the Director of Data & Platform Engineering, you will take on the unique opportunity to lead and shape three critical functions within our Data, Analytics & AI organization. These teams are the Retail Data Domain, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), and Incident Management. You will help sustain and promote our data-driven transformation, ensuring our established modern data platform continues to deliver Data as a Product with world-class operational support. Your leadership will empower our business by applying valuable insights and infrastructure to lead innovation, enhance operational efficiency, and maximize overall value.
 

You have a rare blend of deep technical expertise in modern data concepts like Data Mesh, an understanding of the retail business, and an to engage with partners at every level. About the Job
  • Leadership & Strategy:
    • Lead a team of three leaders and ~40 people across the Retail Data Domain, SRE, and Incident Management tasks.
    • Collaborate with technology product teams, executives, and store teams to deliver applicable insights across the organization.
    • Guide insights beyond dashboards through AI-powered conversational analytics and clear goal explanations.
    • Champion a culture of innovation, reliability, and data-driven decision-making across a geographically distributed organization.
  • Retail Data Domain Leadership:
    • Lead the delivery of retail data products, defining and ensuring adherence to SLOs for data availability, freshness, and accuracy.
    • Manage the development of executive-level dashboards that power decision-making for our executive leadership team, including the CEO. You will ensure these dashboards provide accurate, and applicable data that enables strategic choices at the highest level.
    • Embrace our "own what you build" philosophy by taking full accountability not only to develop these solutions but also for ensuring their ongoing. This includes providing support, maintaining reliability, and addressing issues so that the data products deliver value and performance for our users.
  • Site Reliability Engineering (SRE):
    • Oversee the SRE team responsible for the reliability, scalability, and performance of our entire Data and AI platform infrastructure in Google Cloud.
    • Guide the vision and execution of a company-wide, self-serve data infrastructure to democratize data access and accelerate innovation.
    • Ensure our platform teams and data users have the efficient tools they need to build and deploy data products with confidence.
  • Incident Management:
    • Lead the global incident management process for all data and AI systems, ensuring rapid response, resolution, and minimal business disruption.
    • Develop and implement best practices for incident communication, post-mortems, and preventative measures to improve system reliability.
    • Foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement within the incident management team and across the organization.
About You
  • Experience in a senior leadership role with experience managing other managers and leading leaders in a technical environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in designing and managing large-scale, modern cloud-based data platforms, with a preference for experience on Google Cloud.
  • Expertise in delivering Data as a Product, including defining and managing SLOs for data availability, freshness, and accuracy.
  • Experience with the retail industry, including business processes, important metrics, and the unique challenges of a retail environment.

The expected starting salary range for this role is $177,400- $295,600 per year. We may pay more or less than the posted range based on the location of the role. We will base the amount a employee will earn within the salary range on factors such as relevant education, qualifications, performance and our needs.
