Director, Indirect Taxes

The Director of Indirect Taxes reports directly to the Vice President of Tax and is responsible for the oversight of indirect taxes in the US and Canada as well as owning inputs relevant to US State direct taxes. This role will partner closely with Accounting, Financial Operations (Billing), Enterprise Systems (IT), and Commercial teams to ensure accurate and compliant indirect tax execution. Indirect taxes includes sales and use taxes, Canadian sales or consumption taxes (e.g., GST/HST/PST/QST), personal property taxes, business licensing, gross receipts taxes, and other indirect taxes as they arise.

This role is onsite 4 days a week at any of the following Shift4 locations: Atlanta, GA / Center Valley PA / Morrisville, NC / Tampa, FL 

Relocation assistance may be available. 

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the management and supervision of outsourced compliance tax functions such as US sales tax, property tax, unclaimed property, business licensing, and Canadian GST/HST/PST/QST.
  • Ensure accurate and timely filings and remittances with respect to US and Canadian indirect taxes.
  • Ensure nexus and collection profile is aligned with Company operations.
  • Reconcile accruals and tax payments to ensure accuracy and proper allocation to ledger accounts.
  • Manage the indirect tax landscape by identifying and remediating areas of exposure
  • Analyze tax reserves and prepare indirect tax account reconciliations.
  • Manage notice correspondence and audits related to various indirect tax types.
  • Coordinate with internal departments to obtain data, reports, or other documentation as required.
  • Provide recommendations on taxability of revenues related to software, tangible property, and payment processing fees.
  • Establish and enhance key indirect tax processes while identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Manage Avalara integrations and other indirect tax software integrations or connections to accounting systems.
  • Manage internal billing systems taxability settings and reporting.
  • Lead the onboarding indirect tax processes from acquisitions.
  • Prepare and compile state apportionment data for SALT direct tax compliance.

Requirements:

  • 6+ years of indirect tax experience from a public accounting firm or large Multinational Corporation.  Mix of public accounting and in-house experience is a significant differentiator.
  • Experience in Fintech or SaaS industries is a significant differentiator.
  • Experience with Avalara software products required.
  • Keen knowledge of financial systems and multi-dimensional report tools – Oracle Fusion a plus.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills required.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel.  
  • Strong work ethic and ability to drive projects to completion within a defined timeframe.

Preferred Skills (Additional experience that is a plus to have): 

  • Experience with data automation tools such as Alteryx.
  • CPA
