Tempus' proprietary platform connects an entire ecosystem of real-world evidence to deliver real-time, actionable insights to physicians, providing critical information about the right treatments for the right patients, at the right time.

Tempus is seeking a Director, Revenue Cycle Operations to serve as the primary business unit liaison for Tempus AI Diagnostics. This leader will provide day-to-day operational oversight of the end-to-end revenue cycle, partnering closely with diagnostic laboratory operations, finance, commercial, reimbursement, technology, compliance, and external revenue-cycle partners.

The Director will ensure that revenue cycle processes are scalable, compliant, operationally effective, and aligned to the business unit’s financial and patient-access objectives. The ideal candidate brings deep diagnostic laboratory revenue cycle expertise and direct, hands-on operational experience with Quadax.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Business Unit Partnership & Leadership
    • Serve as the principal revenue cycle liaison to the Tempus AI Diagnostics business unit, translating business priorities into clear operational plans and performance expectations.
    • Advise business leaders on revenue cycle implications of new tests, payor requirements, client arrangements, pricing, coverage policies, and operational changes.
    • Lead cross-functional governance and operating rhythms for revenue cycle performance, risks, priorities, and issue resolution.
    • Build strong working relationships across laboratory operations, billing, finance, commercial, medical affairs, compliance, legal, product, and technology teams.
  • Revenue Cycle Operations
    • Direct the daily operational performance of the diagnostic laboratory revenue cycle across patient intake, eligibility and benefits verification, prior authorization support, charge capture, coding, claims submission, payment posting, denials, appeals, patient billing, collections, and reporting.
    • Establish, monitor, and continuously improve key performance indicators, including clean claim rate, first-pass yield, denial rate, days in accounts receivable, cash collections, net collection rate, authorization turnaround time, and patient balance outcomes.
    • Identify root causes of operational leakage, denials, delayed reimbursement, and billing defects; lead corrective actions through sustainable process, system, and workflow improvements.
    • Ensure appropriate operational controls, documentation, escalation paths, and audit readiness across the revenue cycle.
    • Partner with internal teams and vendors to optimize workflows, service-level performance, and accountability.
  • Quadax Oversight
    • Bring direct operational expertise with Quadax to manage and improve revenue cycle workflows, work queues, claim and remittance processes, reporting, and exception handling.
    • Oversee the effective use of Quadax tools and data to support claims management, follow-up, denial prevention, payment reconciliation, and operational reporting.
    • Partner with technology, laboratory operations, and revenue-cycle stakeholders to define requirements, prioritize enhancements, validate changes, and manage implementation impacts.
    • Develop standards for Quadax data quality, workflow configuration, user adoption, reporting accuracy, and issue resolution.
  • Diagnostic Laboratory Reimbursement Expertise
    • Apply deep knowledge of diagnostic laboratory billing and reimbursement practices, including CPT/HCPCS coding, ICD-10 diagnosis coding, medical necessity, payor edits, coverage requirements, laboratory-specific claim rules, and appeals.
    • Monitor reimbursement trends and regulatory or payor-policy changes that may affect Tempus AI Diagnostics revenue cycle performance.
    • Partner with compliance and legal stakeholders to ensure workflows and practices align with applicable billing, reimbursement, privacy, and regulatory requirements.
    • Support the operational launch of new diagnostic offerings by assessing revenue-cycle readiness and defining required processes, systems, controls, and training.
  • Team, Vendor & Change Management
    • Lead, coach, and develop revenue cycle operations staff and/or vendor partners, fostering a high-accountability, data-driven, continuous-improvement culture.
    • Establish clear service-level agreements, performance reviews, and escalation mechanisms for external partners.
    • Lead complex operational change initiatives from assessment through implementation, adoption, measurement, and refinement.
    • Create executive-ready reporting and communicate performance, risks, decisions, and recommendations to senior stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in business, healthcare administration, finance, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
    • 10+ years of progressive revenue cycle operations experience, including substantial experience in diagnostic laboratory, molecular diagnostics, genetic testing, pathology, or a closely related laboratory environment.
    • 5+ years leading teams, programs, or major operational functions at a manager, senior manager, director, or equivalent level.
    • Direct, hands-on operational experience with Quadax, including workflow management, claims and remittance processes, reporting, issue resolution, and/or system optimization.
    • Deep understanding of the end-to-end diagnostic laboratory revenue cycle, including eligibility, authorization, charge capture, coding, claims, denials, appeals, payment posting, patient billing, and collections.
    • Demonstrated expertise in laboratory reimbursement requirements, payor policies, medical necessity, coding, billing edits, and denial prevention.
    • Proven ability to use operational and financial data to identify performance gaps, prioritize action, and deliver measurable improvements.
    • Experience leading cross-functional initiatives involving business, operational, technical, financial, and compliance stakeholders.
    • Strong executive communication, relationship-building, problem-solving, and change-management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in healthcare administration, business administration, finance, or a related discipline.
    • Experience supporting revenue cycle operations for high-complexity, molecular, genomic, oncology, or AI-enabled diagnostic testing.
    • Experience managing third-party revenue cycle vendors and defining service-level agreements and performance metrics.
    • Familiarity with laboratory information systems, electronic health record integrations, clearinghouses, and revenue cycle analytics tools.
    • Lean, Six Sigma, project management, or other process-improvement certification.
  • Leadership Competencies
    • Operational ownership: Takes accountability for outcomes and drives issues through resolution.
    • Strategic partnership: Connects detailed revenue-cycle operations to business-unit priorities and financial performance.
    • Analytical rigor: Uses data to diagnose problems, measure impact, and guide decisions.
    • Cross-functional influence: Builds alignment across diverse teams without relying solely on direct authority.
    • Continuous improvement: Creates scalable, compliant processes that improve the experience for patients, providers, payors, and internal partners.
