Program Duration: October 6, 2025 - April 17, 2026

INTERN WILL LEARN AND BE EXPOSED TO:

This internship takes a micro-to-macro view of web content: Starting with individual stories and projects produced to meet a news moment, then zooming out to identify larger patterns and best practices for preserving that content for the long term.

This internship consists of two parts. Each part  will be hosted by a different team:

Editorial Graphics, October-January

We are looking for a graphics editor/designer to join our team. You will work on information graphics, data visualizations and special story presentations, working in close collaboration with reporters and editors in our newsroom. Work assignments will vary depending on team needs and news demands. The intern can expect to hone their data visualization, coding and reporting skills with the team’s mentorship.

Web Archivist, Research, Archives & Data Strategy (RAD), January-April

We are looking for a curious archivist to work on a time-sensitive project: archiving 20+ years of NPR's digital content. Your work will center on planning and curation, identifying the needs of stakeholders, and assessing the technical aspects of web content. You will apply and further develop your knowledge of interactive media audiovisual assets. You will evaluate materials, apply metadata, develop training materials for users, and present your findings and recommendations to the RAD team and our stakeholders.

This is an NPR editorial role covered under the terms of the NPR Ethics Handbook. All editorial staff are bound by this guidance. Editorial staff are defined as staff members who play a role in shaping the journalistic or creative direction of NPR's content, including events.

Interns will have the opportunity to experience & support the work of the team in the following areas...

  • Editorial Graphics
    • Design and develop publication-quality graphics and web presentations on a variety of time scales (from short-turnaround requests to longer-term projects)
    • Research, analyze and visualize data for reporting
  • RAD
    • Collaborate with RAD's archivists and technologists to develop NPR’s first web archive
    • Conduct research to help RAD determine best practices around preserving interactives being created currently
  • All work of the intern is to be performed under the close supervision of the host teams

A strong internship candidate for this role might have…

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, be attentive to detail and meet deadlines
  • Interest in growth and willingness to respond to professional feedback
  • Demonstrated experience making graphics and designing for the Web. This includes experience with front-end web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, D3) and designing responsively (from big desktop screens to mobile devices)
  • Familiarity with digital preservation, archiving, data management
  • Comfort with spreadsheets and data (CSV, JSON, etc.). Data analysis and back-end programming (Python or similar) skills a plus

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Resume
  • Cover Letter
  • Portfolio Link

EDUCATION

  • Must be a current student in an accredited degree program or a recent graduate of no more than 12 months from the month of the start of the internship.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
