Description of Work

The primary purpose of Location & Surveys is to serve as support services in providing engineering analysis, mapping and other data for the design of transportation facilities and the acquisition of property for the construction of transportation facilities.
 
The primary purpose of this organizational unit is to provide Statewide engineering and geomatics analysis in the development of transportation facilities and acquisition of property in accordance with the best professional engineering and surveying practices consistent with all laws and regulations governing the State Highway System.
We are looking for a Staff Engineer to support the Location & Surveys Unit.
In this role you will:
•Assist Location & Surveys Staff with tracking and reporting project fiscal and schedule information.
•Assist with efforts across the Unit to improve processes and procedures related to surveying/geomatics techniques from planning to construction.
•Lead or assist in creating and updating manuals, training, and guidance documents to support the role of the Group Leaders and PEF Partners in the Unit and others in the Division of Highways.
•Lead or assist in responding to inquiries from the public and DOT management regarding DOT policies, projects, plans and proposed work.
•Lead or participate in various work groups and make recommendations to the Unit Manager for process and project improvements.
•Communicate and work with internal NCDOT staff as well as external partners.
•Facilitation of meetings, documentation of activities and follow-up action items.
•Research of new and innovative technologies.
•Facilitate activities with TEAs, interns, and educational institutions.
•Facilitate Unit safety program and safety audits.
•Work independently with minimal supervision.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC20 $70,478 - $123,336

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience utilizing professional engineering techniques, practices, and procedures, and knowledge of NCDOT organizational structures and budgetary planning.
  • Experience developing, interpreting, and administering policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Experience establishing and managing priorities, developing work schedules, monitoring goal and schedule progress, and tracking data and activities.
  • Experience anticipating and resolving problems, working cooperatively with others, influencing others to achieve results, and enhancing organizational effectiveness and project delivery.
  • Experience drafting and disseminating clear and concise written communications to a broad range of audiences.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
