You’ll be responsible for holding engineers accountable, fostering a culture of technical excellence, and growing their skills. The role requires balancing business priorities with architectural integrity, avoiding short-term hacks, and ensuring investments align with long-term goals. You will not be expected to ship code yourself but will guide the team to success through strong management and cross-functional collaboration.

This role will be remote but candidates should reside in either San Francisco, Seattle or NYC to allow for team collaboration when needed. In the future, this role may possibly become hybrid in one of the aforementioned cities.

In this role, you will:
  • Manage and mentor a team of software engineers to achieve business outcomes.

  • Ensure the team delivers on the team’s goals

  • Guide the team to build robust architectures while avoiding premature over-investments.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Hardware, Marketing, Design, Production) to align on priorities and unblock hurdles.

  • Foster engineer growth through coaching, feedback, and tailored development plans.

You might thrive in this role if you:
  • Have 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 2 years managing engineering teams.

  • Have a proven track record of leading teams to deliver reliable, high-quality software systems in a fast-paced environment.

  • Are skilled in system design and architecture, with experience guiding teams to balance short-term needs with long-term scalability.

  • Have strong people management skills, with experience mentoring engineers and fostering career growth.

  • Excel at cross-functional collaboration, aligning diverse teams to achieve shared goals.

  • Are comfortable navigating ambiguity and driving execution in a high-stakes, outcome-driven environment.

  • Have experience with metrics-driven development, such as building dashboards or tracking KPIs like first-pass yield or bug resolution SLAs.

  • Are familiar with robotics or hardware/software integration (preferred but not required).

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
