That's No Moon is an independent studio of storytellers and game-makers who believe in the power of narrative-driven experiences. With a diverse team of talented developers, our shared vision is to create the future of AAA experiences with a culture of creativity, collaboration, and responsible production practices. Our passionate team of developers helps shape our studio, our projects, and our future.

We are looking for an Expert Technical Game Designer to architect and own complex design systems in Unreal while delivering high-quality implementations at high velocity. You will define scalable workflows and pipelines, remove execution friction, and raise throughput of the team.

Responsibilities:

  • Architect scalable gameplay systems and personally drive them from prototype to production-ready implementation, maintaining high output without sacrificing systemic integrity or performance.
  • Identify and eliminate technical and workflow bottlenecks that slow iteration, increasing team throughput and reducing rework.
  • We believe in ownership, so the more of your vision that you can prototype with your own skills, the better.
  • We also believe in open communication and collaboration – use your skills to communicate your vision to the rest of the team and get all the departments pumped to collaborate with you!
  • Partner with production to set aggressive but realistic execution targets, consistently delivering features on schedule while proactively managing scope, risk, and technical debt.

Requirements & Skills:

  • Demonstrated history of shipping complex, systemic features and content on AAA titles under tight deadlines.
  • Deep understanding of Unreal, runtime performance, memory constraints, and systemic edge cases.
  • Ability to debug and resolve multi-system interactions independently
  • Knowledge of Unreal engine a plus.
  • Knowledge of art packages such as Maya, Max, and the Adobe suite a plus.

Qualities:

  • Have a cinematic eye! Conceptualize and pitch game systems and mechanics. Communicate clearly and visually to the Directors and the team.
  • Have ownership of your content. Once the design has been approved, the Expert Technical Game Designer will be responsible for these features to ship.
  • Be creative. We don’t want to micromanage. Nothing makes us happier than seeing you prototype ideas we would have never conceptualized.
  • Be proactive. Don’t wait to be assigned a task – pitch concepts that you believe will make the game or process better and pitch them regularly.
  • Be a generalist. Learn whatever skills will help you complete your vision. From making prototype assets, to animation, VFX, mocap, audio, etc – a designer is a versatile person. You will have stellar artists and engineers to help you, but the more you can present a singular vision to us with your prototype work, the more excited we will get about it!
  • Be responsible. You will be checking in script and level content without review. It’s your job not to break the build.

And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
