We are looking for a Software Engineer to support a critical VA claims adjudication system. This role will participate in building, enhancing, and maintaining API services, backend systems, and integrations that power Veteran and caregiver travel claim submissions. You will collaborate closely with designers, analysts, product owners, and other engineers to deliver high-quality capabilities in two-week agile sprints.
Requirements:
Ability to successfully obtain a U.S. Federal Position of Trust clearance.
Must reside in and be able to perform work in the United States.
Must have lived in the United States for 3 of the last 5 years.
Qualifications:
Experience in backend service development using modern programming languages.
Familiarity with RESTful APIs, integrations, and asynchronous processing.
Understanding of cloud deployment patterns and automated testing.
Ability to troubleshoot production issues in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
Strong focus on code quality, maintainability, and security.
Responsibilities:
Enhance and maintain API, Claim Ingest API, and backend supporting systems.
Develop integrations with VA.gov, the VA API ecosystem (vets-api), mobile apps, and staff-facing tools.
Implement performant, secure, and reliable services for automated claim adjudication and processing.
Support two-week sprint delivery through coding, testing, and documentation.
Participate in code reviews, pair programming, and continuous improvement activities.
Collaborate with DevOps to support CI/CD workflows and zero-downtime deployments.
Troubleshoot production issues and participate in on-call escalations where needed.
Ensure all work adheres to VA standards including 508 accessibility, security, and authoritative data usage.
