College Board – Technology – GenAI Studio

Location: This is a fully remote role. Candidates who live near CB offices have the option of being fully remote or hybrid (Tuesday and Wednesday in office).

Type: This is a full-time position

About the Team

The GenAI Studio is an internal incubator at College Board that launched in January 2024. Through the studio, College Board is investing time and resources for AI ideation. The studio is responsibly experimenting with AI in AP classrooms and creating strategic partnerships to make informed decisions about AI in our broader portfolio of offerings. The studio is led by a diverse, cross-functional team of strategists, technologists, and managers at College Board committed to solving the most impactful and interesting problems arising with AI. Across the team we divide the work around strategic enablement within our organization, AI innovations that are both internally and externally facing, and advancing AI Literacy in the education space.

About the Opportunity

As a Lead Full Stack Engineer on the Generative AI Studio, you are a leader, collaborator, and innovator. You will work daily with our Data Scientist, UX Designer, and Product Manager. You have a strong interest in understanding our stakeholders and leveraging new technologies to support them. You relish the opportunity to bring new ideas and your love of software to prototype new products, establish new patterns, and serve as a SME for working with Generative AI. You are not shy about taking on new work you may not have done before while owning all phases of prototyping including requirements definition and analysis, application design, coding, reviewing, testing, deploying, and support. You are eager to lead by example as well as more formally through peer collaboration, coaching and mentoring.

In this role, you will perform:

Prototyping and Development (60%)

  • Design and implement proofs of concept or prototypes to allow rapid testing of innovative concepts using the latest technologies, typically React web apps
  • Create sharable documentation, both technical and non-technical
  • Exercise discretion in prototyping: investing time to make sure the most important things work well, and working with the team to mock or minimize less important features
  • When prototypes are greenlit for further development: continue that work, or support hand-off to other internal teams
  • Maintain clean code and strong engineering standards such that when prototypes are greenlit for further development, the project is easy to build upon
  • Occasionally embed with other engineering teams that take up on-going work on a prototype
  • Continuously develop the skills required to work with this rapidly developing technology

Strategic Enablement (30%)

  • Serve as an organizational Subject Matter Expert on implementing Generative AI applications
  • Work with our Enterprise Architecture team to review and/or establish implementation patterns involving Generative AI tools
  • Advise on, and where feasible, create tools and infrastructure that will enable teams to safely deploy Generative AI tools; depending on organizational priority, this may include setting up an internal GenAI chatbot tool with the support of other engineers

Learning & Sharing (10%)

  • Keep abreast of developments in GenAI capabilities and implementations
  • Share knowledge of new developments with the team via chats, meetings, and presentations when appropriate
  • Serve as an advisor to internal teams developing staff education around Generative AI

About You

You are a self-starter who can manage all aspects of software prototyping. You enjoy a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment. You are energized by working closely with product, design, and research colleagues. You have a passion for experimenting with new technology, and especially AI.

You Have:

  • 7+ years of professional experience designing, building, testing, and managing scalable web applications in cloud-hosted environments
  • 3+ years’ experience building front-end applications using React (with TypeScript)
  • Hands-on experience implementing Generative AI applications (e.g., RAG chatbots, model fine-tuning, or other LLM-powered tools)
  • Enthusiasm for learning new technologies, especially in the fast-moving GenAI space
  • Expertise in developing responsive, accessible UIs with JavaScript, TypeScript, CSS, and HTML
  • Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with back-end technologies such as Node.js and/or Python
  • Experience with asynchronous programming and event-driven messaging patterns
  • Strong knowledge of AWS services (e.g., Lambda, SNS, SQS, S3, Step Functions, IAM, KMS, API Gateway, CloudWatch, DynamoDB)
  • Experience provisioning/managing infrastructure as code with AWS CLI, CloudFormation, CDK, and/or Terraform
  • Experience with relational and NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redshift, DynamoDB)
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments
  • Proven ability to mentor and coach less experienced teammates in new technologies
  • Strong analytical thinking, structured problem-solving, and practical decision-making skills
  • Effective communication and documentation skills

All roles at College Board require:

  • A passion for expanding educational and career opportunities and mission-driven work
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm for emerging technologies, with a willingness to experiment with and adopt new AI-driven solutions and a comfort learning and applying new digital tools independently and proactively.
  • Clear and concise communication skills, written and verbal
  • A learner's mindset and a commitment to growth: welcoming diverse perspectives, giving and receiving timely, respectful feedback, and continuously improving through iterative learning and user input.
  • A drive for impact and excellence: solving complex problems, making data-informed decisions, prioritizing what matters most, and continuously improving through learning, user input, and external benchmarking.
  • A collaborative and empathetic approach: working across differences, fostering trust, and contributing to a culture of shared success.
  • The ability to travel 3-5 times a year to College Board offices or on behalf of College Board business
  • Authorization to work in the United States for any employer

About Our Process

  • Application review will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. This role is expected to accept applications for a minimum of 5 business days.
  • While the hiring process may vary, it generally includes: resume and application submission, recruiter phone/video screen, hiring manager interview, performance exercise such as live coding, a panel interview, a conversation with leadership and reference checks.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
