Job Responsibilities:

TERMS OF APPRENTICESHIP:

  • The apprenticeship program is designed to be completed over four (4) years and includes 8,000 hours of on-the-job learning (OJL), supplemented by a minimum of 144 hours of related technical instruction annually, which may include one to two college courses per year.
  • Candidates with prior related technical training, college coursework, apprenticeship experience, or documented OJL hours may be eligible to receive credit toward certain apprenticeship requirements. Any such credit will be evaluated in accordance with program guidelines and may impact the overall program timeline.
  • Every applicant selected for apprenticeship will serve a probationary period of 25% of the term length of the occupation.
  • During the apprenticeship program, the apprentice shall receive work experience and job-related training in all phases of the occupation, including safe work practices, necessary to develop the skill and proficiency of a skilled professional.
  • Magna Engineered Glass and Program Sponsor/Apprenticeship Works committee will ensure apprentices are rotated throughout the various work processes to ensure a well-rounded professional upon completion of the apprenticeship and will provide a learning management system to track progression of on-the-job and related training.
  • On-the-job training shall be carried out under supervision of a qualified professional.
  • Additional information about the program, the apprenticeship standards (Appendix A), and the EEO complaint procedure will be made available to all interested applicants upon request.
  • Successful completion of the apprenticeship program includes a two (2) year post-completion employment commitment. Should an employee voluntarily terminate employment within twenty-four (24) months following program completion, repayment of a prorated portion of apprenticeship-related costs may be required under the terms of the applicable Apprenticeship Repayment Agreement and in accordance with applicable laws.

WORK SCHEDULE EXPECTATIONS:

  • Must be able to work assigned shifts, including overtime, weekends, holidays, or alternative schedules as business needs require
  • Must maintain satisfactory attendance throughout the apprenticeship program
  • Related classroom instruction may occur outside of regular working hours
  • Schedule flexibility may be required to complete training rotations and developmental assignments

JOB SUMMARY:

The Tool & Die Maker Apprentice participates in a structured four-year registered apprenticeship program designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to become a skilled Tool & Die Maker. Under the supervision of qualified Tool & Die Makers and manufacturing professionals, the apprentice will learn to build, repair, troubleshoot, maintain, and improve molds, dies, tools, fixtures, and precision components used in manufacturing operations.

The apprentice will receive progressive on-the-job training and related classroom instruction in machining, blueprint reading, measuring systems, metallurgy, CNC machining, tool building, die assembly, safety practices, and continuous improvement methodologies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:`

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Participate in Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  • Work safely around machinery, hoists, cranes, and lifting devices.
  • Handle hazardous materials in compliance with OSHA, EPA, and company requirements.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas using 5S and housekeeping standards.
  • Report safety concerns, near misses, incidents, and injuries immediately.

Apprenticeship Development

  • Complete all required apprenticeship coursework and training assignments.
  • Maintain satisfactory progress in classroom and hands-on training.
  • Document and track apprenticeship hours and competencies.
  • Demonstrate continuous improvement in technical and professional skills.
  • Participate in periodic progress reviews with supervisors and mentors.

Machining & Manufacturing

  • Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, GD&T specifications, and work instructions.
  • Perform machinist calculations involving geometry, trigonometry, measurements, feeds, and speeds.
  • Operate and maintain machine tools including:
    • Lathes
    • Milling machines
    • Surface grinders
    • Drill presses
    • Band saws
    • CNC machining centers
    • Tool room equipment

Measurement & Inspection

  • Use precision measuring instruments including:
    • Micrometers
    • Calipers
    • Height gauges
    • Dial indicators
    • Bore gauges
    • Gauge blocks
    • Surface comparators
  • Conduct in-process and final inspections.
  • Verify dimensions and tolerances to engineering specifications.

Tool & Die Construction

  • Assist in building, assembling, repairing, and modifying:
    • Production molds
    • Dies
    • Fixtures
    • Jigs
    • Precision tooling
  • Perform fitting, grinding, drilling, reaming, tapping, machining, and assembly operations.
  • Participate in tryout, troubleshooting, and validation of tooling components.

Equipment Maintenance

  • Perform preventive maintenance activities.
  • Assist in troubleshooting tooling and process problems.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action activities.

Teamwork & Communication

  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, technicians, engineers, and co-workers.
  • Participate in team meetings and problem-solving activities.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, attendance reliability, and accountability.
  • Support production requirements while maintaining quality and safety standards
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational goals.
  • Actively contribute to a positive and collaborative work environment, demonstrating flexibility to adapt to evolving business needs and priorities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic mechanical aptitude
  • Basic mathematics proficiency including fractions, decimals and geometry
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications
  • Strong attention to detail and quality
  • Ability to learn machining and manufacturing processes
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and protocols in manufacturing environments.
  • English proficiency required, with strong verbal and written communication skills. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
  • Must successfully complete all apprenticeship-related training and coursework.
  • Must maintain satisfactory job performance and training progress.
  • Must comply with all company policies, procedures, and standards of conduct.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior manufacturing experience
  • Vocational or technical school coursework in machining, manufacturing, engineering technology or related field
  • Prior documented on-the-job learning (OJL) experience in machining, tool and die, maintenance, manufacturing, or another skilled trades environment
  • 6Exposure to CNC machining and blueprint reading

HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prolonged standing at least 8 hours, but up to 12 hours per day
  • Conduct work in compliance with the Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) regulations and ISO45001 Occupational H&S Management System (OHSMS) and ISO14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) requirements
  • Follow all Magna Engineered Glass’ HSE policies and procedures
  • Use and wear the right personal protective equipment (PPE) and protective devices
  • Report absence or defect in any equipment or protective device to the Supervisor/Manager
  • Report any hazard, unsafe act or condition to the Supervisor/Manager
  • Attend/participate in all required training

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position is performed in a manufacturing and tool room environment and may involve:

  • Exposure to machine oils and coolants.
  • Moving mechanical equipment.
  • Forklift and crane traffic.
  • Variable temperatures.
  • Personal protective equipment requirements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The employee must be able to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Frequently use hands for handling tools and materials.
  • Lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds with or without accommodation.
  • Work in manufacturing environments with noise, vibration, heat, and moving machinery.
  • Perform repetitive motions and precision hand work.
  • Bend, kneel, climb, reach, and work in confined spaces as required.
