WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Slate Auto is seeking a Manager, Commercial Accounting to lead the technical accounting, policy development, and operational accounting execution related to warranty and service programs. This role is ideal for a hands‑on technical accounting leader with deep expertise in ASC 450 who thrives in fast‑paced, build‑and‑scale environments.

The ideal candidate brings strong warranty accounting experience, understands the downstream accounting implications of operational decisions, and partners effectively across Finance, Sales, Operations, Legal, and FP&A. This person is proactive, highly analytical, and comfortable establishing controls, solving complex accounting issues, and mentoring teams in a high‑growth automotive or EV setting.

WHAT YOU GET TO DO

  • Own the accounting, policy development, and ongoing governance for warranty and service liabilities in accordance with ASC 450 and other relevant GAAP guidance
  • Partner cross‑functionally with Sales, Operations, Legal, Engineering, and FP&A to ensure warranty programs, service offerings, and contractual terms are appropriately reflected in accounting conclusions
  • Develop, document, and maintain warranty liability methodologies, including assumptions, estimates, roll‑forwards, and management review controls
  • Evaluate new products, services, and operational changes to anticipate accounting impacts before launch and prevent downstream issues
  • Prepare and review quarterly and annual warranty accruals, true‑ups, and related disclosures
  • Serve as the technical accounting lead for warranty‑related matters during audits, including position papers and auditor discussions
  • Design and implement scalable processes and internal controls to support growth, automation, and SOX readiness (as applicable)
  • Collaborate with FP&A on forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis related to warranty and service costs
  • Develop and mentor team members, fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and technical excellence
  • Drive process improvements within NetSuite or similar ERP systems to enhance data accuracy, reporting, and operational insight

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • CPA required; active license preferred
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years in public accounting
  • Deep expertise in ASC 450, with demonstrated ability to research, document, and defend complex technical accounting positions
  • Prior experience with warranty accounting, service accruals, or contingent liabilities
  • Automotive, EV, mobility, or vehicle remarketing industry experience strongly preferred
  • Advanced Excel skills required; NetSuite or similar ERP experience a plus
  • Proven ability to anticipate accounting implications of operational decisions and influence stakeholders proactively
  • Demonstrated people leadership skills, including coaching, mentoring, and performance management
  • Comfortable building scalable processes from scratch in a high‑growth environment with evolving requirements

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
