At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will work on the design, analysis, development, and qualification of the next generation of components for use on the New Glenn rocket.  Components will consist of items like valves, regulators, accumulators, actuators, manifolds, mechanisms, pumps, and other mechanical devices the program needs to support our vehicles and missions.

Your scope will encompass the complete life cycle of the system from definition, interfaces, conceptual design, detailed design, component development, assembly, verification, qual testing, operation, manufacturing support, and post flight serviceability.  You will also be responsible to ensuring all cost and scheduling requirements are met.

You will work with suppliers and Blue Origin groups to identify and procure components.  You will size, select material, and analyze flow and structural integrity under pressure, vibration, temperature and mechanical loads.  You will work with suppliers and other support organizations to procure, fabricate, and install flight hardware. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of detailed mechanical design, requirements, layouts, analysis, component selection, modeling, drafting, manufacturing, and test definition.

To be successful in this position you will have proven skills in mechanical design, fluid/thermal analysis, structural analysis, material selection, manufacturing processes, engineering release, component/system development testing and vendor management.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or equivalent
  • 5+ years of proven experience in the design of fluid, mechanical, and/or electro-mechanical systems
  • Experience in 3D CAD programs (Creo preferred)
  • Experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools to analyze pressurized systems and secondary structures (ANSYS preferred)
  • Proficiency in crafting engineering drawings with GD&T (ASME Y14.5)
  • Solid understanding of fluid components (valves, regulators, accumulators, actuators, manifolds, mechanisms, pumps, and other mechanical devices)
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Solid understanding of fabrication, integration processes, and quality control techniques relevant to tubes, machined components, and welded hardware
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or equivalent
  • Experience in aerospace and/or space industry
  • Experience designing systems with Hydrogen, Oxygen, Methane, and hydraulic fluids in liquid and/or gaseous states
  • Experience in system layout or component design for launch vehicle or ground cryogenic and pressure systems
  • Experience designing seal and bearing packages for valves and actuators
  • Experience with thermo-fluid solver applications Thermal Desktop (Sinda Fluint), AFT (Fathom/Arrow), Excel based models, REFPROP
  • Proven understanding of materials properties and treatments; preference for aerospace materials
  • Hands-on experience building and testing mechanical assemblies or pressurized components/systems
  • Experience in engineering analysis/support for disposition of Non-Conformance (NC) related to fluid components, machined parts, weldments, and electro-mechanical assemblies
  • Experience with cryogenic transport elements (tube/pipe), bellows, flex hoses and Mechanical Flexible Assemblies (MFA).
