What You Will Do

You'll join our Build for Scale team, which owns internal tooling, automation, and operational infrastructure. As our team's second hire, you'll design and build robust systems that capture, process, and serve data from diverse sources across the organization in order to architect scalable solutions that power reporting, automation, and AI implementations, serving as the technical bridge between engineering teams and business stakeholders. Your focus will be on building production-grade internal systems that enable the entire company to operate more efficiently and make data-driven decisions.

How You Will Contribute

Core Engineering Responsibilities:

  • Build production data systems – design and implement scalable data pipelines, ETL processes, and APIs that handle structured and unstructured data from multiple sources
  • Develop internal applications – write maintainable code for internal tools, automation services, and integrations
  • Own system architecture – make technical decisions about data flow, system design, and technology stack choices that balance immediate needs with long-term scalability

Cross-functional Engineering:

  • Partner with engineering teams – collaborate with Product and Engineering to define APIs, data contracts, and integration patterns
  • Translate business requirements – work with Legal, Finance, and Investments teams to understand their needs and architect technical solutions
  • Lead technical projects – own end-to-end delivery of complex systems from requirements gathering through deployment and maintenance

Infrastructure & Operations:

  • Maintain production systems – ensure high availability, performance, and reliability of data infrastructure and internal applications
  • Automate operational processes – replace manual workflows with robust, tested automation using appropriate technologies
  • Scale data infrastructure – design systems that grow with the business, implementing proper data modeling, caching, and optimization strategies
What Makes a Great Fit

Engineering Experience (2-4 years preferred):

  • Software engineering background with strong programming skills in Python, SQL, and modern development practices
  • Experience building and maintaining production data systems, APIs, or backend services
  • Understanding of software engineering best practices: version control, testing, CI/CD, code review

Data Engineering Skills:

  • Hands-on experience with data pipeline tools (dbt, Fivetran, or similar)
  • Strong SQL skills and experience with data warehouses (Snowflake)
  • API development experience and understanding of RESTful services, webhooks, and data formats
  • Knowledge of data modeling, schema design, and building scalable data architectures

Systems & Process Engineering:

  • Experience automating business processes through code and low/no-code tools
  • Ability to design fault-tolerant systems and implement proper backup/recovery procedures
  • Knowledge of security best practices for internal systems and data handling

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Can translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams and leading technical initiatives
  • Strong project management skills with ability to estimate, plan, and deliver technical projects
  • Comfortable taking ownership of systems and being on-call for critical infrastructure

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
