Job Description

This position coordinates shipping and receiving operations and directs inbound and outbound grain shipments at a high-capacity export grain elevator for a global merchandiser and processor of agricultural goods.

Rail Unload Operations

  • Perform daily rail unloading operations
  • Process car lists and grade information on incoming trains from web and Kansas City office
  • Write up numbers of railcars that are in the yard and entering them into a computer
  • Relay binning information to the longshoremen
  • Collect grain samples
  • Enter grain grade details into the inventory system and
  • Release empty railcars from the railroad website and elevator computer system  

Ship Loading Operations

  • Monitor ship loading activities
  • Adjust stocks in the inventory program daily
  • Blend grain and communicate with the stevedores who load grain to ensure that instructions on load orders and practices set forth in the U.S. Grain Standards Act are followed 

Safety and Administrative Operations 

  • Perform inspections in the elevator, including mechanical equipment, rail tracks and general sanitary conditions
  • Ensure that all safety equipment is in good working order
  • Work with maintenance personnel to schedule work to be performed
  • Issue required Company permits for required tasks
  • Indoctrinate new laborers as needed
  • Conduct safety meetings and monitors elevator employees and outside contractors to ensure that all safety and Company policies are followed
  • Data entry of Longshore payroll to the PMA on a weekly basis
  • Assist the management team in maintenance, logistics and overall operations as needed

Qualifications

Basic qualifications:

  • With degree in a related discipline, no experience necessary
  • Two (2) plus years of prior supervisory experience in manufacturing/production/receiving operations, including responsibility for meeting production and safety standards

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • One (1) plus year of experience in grain handling operations (preferably in a supervisory role)

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)

Basic qualifications:

  • Proficiency with MS Word and Excel
  • Strong time management skills
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Basic understanding of operational equipment
  • Good communications skills
  • Ability to withstand long periods of walking or standing
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders as well as work at extended heights of 175 feet, manage confined space entry, withstand extended periods of walking and standing, and move manufacturing materials, products and equipment of 50 pounds or more, which requires regular bending and lifting.
  • Requires climbing fixed ladders or stairs, boarding cargo ships, walking on loading docks which may be wet

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • In lieu of degree, knowledge of OSHA and other safety practices (preferably that pertain to grain elevators)
  • In lieu of degree, demonstrated ability to achieve operating efficiencies while maintaining strong labor relations
  • In lieu of degree, understanding of general terms of collective bargaining agreement(s)
  • Understanding of logistics (e.g., vessel, rail or truck) and inventory management
  • Knowledge of USDA/GIPSA Grain Standards Act for an export terminal
  • Knowledge of grain commodities and grades

Additional Information

Working Conditions

  • This position is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug testing.
  • The majority of the day will be spent in a climate-controlled office environment. Portions of the day will be spent outside with routine visits to operational areas resulting in exposure to a variety of temperatures and prevailing weather conditions. This may also result in exposure to dust, odors, gases, vapors, wet or slick surfaces and loud noises. Where appropriate, wears personal protective equipment (PPE) in compliance with Company standards and governmental regulations. The extension of regular working hours is occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects, attend training or respond to emergencies. Additionally, work may be required on weekends and holidays as dictated by business demands.
  • Requires rotating shifts (7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
