Resolve complex payroll corrections, amended returns, tax notices, and multi-jurisdiction payroll issues for employer customers. Diagnose root causes, coordinate with tax operations, product, and engineering, explain resolutions to partners, and help document and automate recurring processes. The role requires payroll-provider experience across prior-quarter and prior-year amendments, state and local taxes, agency notices, and Canadian equivalents.

Salsa builds embedded payroll infrastructure — our own US and Canada payroll and tax rails — for leading vertical SaaS platforms, allowing them to launch a complete payroll offering. Their software companies sell payroll to their customers; we run the infrastructure underneath.

This dynamic means when something goes wrong with an employer's payroll or taxes, it lands with us. You'll be the person who researched and the hardest class of payroll problem: corrections, amendments, and tax notices — the cases where a mistake or omission from a prior quarter has quietly cascaded into three other problems, and someone has to work out the sequence of what broke and the order to fix it in.

What you'll do

  • Resolve complex payroll corrections. Wage classification, tax jurisdiction updates, setup adjustments, retroactive changes, and void-and-reissue scenarios, including how each one affects quarters that have already been filed.

  • Prepare and file amended returns (941-X, state and local equivalents, W-2c, Canadian equivalents) and see each one through to agency acceptance.

  • Own tax notices end to end. Research the cause, respond to the agency, pursue abatements where they apply, and close the loop with the partner and employer.

  • Find the pattern behind the case. Many cases point to something we can improve in our product or configuration. You'll be close enough to the details to spot these, and you'll partner with tax operations, product, and engineering to turn what you find into lasting fixes.

  • Be the expert partners rely on. You'll work closely with our partner-facing support teams on their toughest cases, and you'll explain resolutions clearly enough that someone without a payroll background can confidently pass them on to their customer.

  • Shape how this work gets done. Beyond resolving cases, you'll document how we solve them and help us automate the repeatable parts, so each solution makes the next one faster.

What you'll bring

  • Several years of hands-on corrections, amendments, and notice resolution at a payroll provider, such as a bureau, a PEO, or a payroll software company. Seeing issues across many employers builds the pattern recognition this role depends on.

  • Systems thinking. You can see how a Q1 detail shows up later as a Q3 notice, a W-2 update, and a reconciliation gap, and you know which thread to pull first.

  • Curiosity about AI and process design. We're reimagining how this work gets done. You'll feel at home here if you like trying new tools, writing a quick script, and helping shape what we build.

  • Clear, approachable writing. A lot of this role is turning complex payroll situations into explanations partners can understand and act on.

Nice to have: CPP or FPC; Canadian payroll experience; MasterTax or similar; experience at a company that ran its own tax engine.
