Full Time

Seattle, WA or Portland, OR

Salary $70,000

Noisy Creek is looking for a talented, detail-oriented Production Designer to help bring our publications, campaigns, and creative projects to life across print and digital platforms. This is an opportunity for an emerging designer with a strong creative eye and a solid foundation in design fundamentals. You’ll collaborate with our creative team to produce editorial layouts, advertising, marketing materials, and other assets for our family of publications, including The Stranger, Portland Mercury, and Chicago Reader.

We’re looking for someone who pairs precision and discipline with creativity and initiative—someone who understands the rules of good design, knows when to break them, and takes pride in getting the details right. You should be comfortable working within established visual systems while bringing fresh thinking to the work, exploring multiple creative directions, and recognizing opportunities to make a project better. You’ll take ownership of your assignments, manage the details with care, and help ensure our creative team produces consistently excellent work. This is an entry-level position, but the work matters, and we’re looking for someone whose talent, curiosity, and drive will make a meaningful contribution from day one.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Editorial layout
  • Sales materials, such as sell-sheets, print issue marketing promo, general sales promo, and event promotional materials across both digital and print formats
  • Print and digital ad build-outs for both outside clientele and internal promotion
  • Upload and maintain the Noisy Creek issue archive on Issuu, including adding all Stranger and Mercury back issues
  • Creating and maintaining Google Slides decks

Requirements

  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Someone who strives to get the job done right the first time
  • Solid understanding of design fundamentals, especially with typography, hierarchy, and spacing
  • Knowledge of using the grid but also knowing when to break the grid
  • Disciplined enough to let best practice guide you, but daring enough to know when to break all the rules
  • Initiative to take on tasks before being asked to do them
  • Ability to work as a team player but also works well independently
  • Curiosity mindset
  • Ability to build out multiple project iterations at the beginning to showcase a variety of design directions
  • Strong design portfolio that shows a variety of design prowess across multiple platforms and assets – both print and digital
  • Software knowledge: Adobe CC, primarily Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Incopy, Google Slides and G-Suite. Experience with motion graphics and Canva a plus.

This position can be based in Seattle, WA, or Portland, OR, with in-office attendance required as needed. It is a union position represented by the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild.

And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
