Project Engineer - Southern Company Gas Support (Birmingham or Atlanta)
WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL
- This position will be based out of The Energy Center in Birmingham, AL or the Southern Company Gas Corp HQ in Atlanta, GA.
- Hybrid work schedule (in-office, field and telecommute); currently four (4) days in-office or at a plant/field site and one (1) day telecommute (subject to adjustment).
- This position will require travel (days and overnight, up to 25%) to various gas facilities.
- Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.
POSITION SUMMARY
The TSS Project Engineer serves as the engineering manager for design and procurement activities of a variety of projects within Southern Company. These projects may range from large capital investments to small maintenance and retrofit efforts supporting gas storage and compression facilities, as well as fossil and renewable electric generating assets.
In this role, the Project Engineer is responsible for managing the engineering scope, budgets, and schedules, while acting as the primary point of contact for engineering deliverables to plant personnel and Southern Company Gas project management.
The position assists with development of contract documents, oversees the award and execution of outsourced engineering work as well as material procurement activities, and supports design and process safety reviews associated with natural gas processing and storage facilities, liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants, and compressor stations.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification:
- B.S. in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification is a plus.
Technical & Leadership Experience:
- 5+ years’ combined experience in either of the following areas:
- Design or project management related to engineering, procurement, construction, and startup for liquid natural gas (LNG) facilities, gas storage facilities, gas compressor stations, heavy industrial projects or electric utility generation
- Experience working in (or in direct support of) LNG, gas storage, gas compression, plant (pulp and paper, chemical, oil, etc.) or electric utility generation facilities
- Experience using regulations 49 CFR 192 (Natural Gas Pipelines) and 49 CFR 193 (LNG Facilities) is a plus.
- Formal or informal experience in a lead type role (i.e. directing activities of direct reports or project team members)
- Budget/schedule management
- Understanding of project change control
- Strong risk mitigation and analytical skills to evaluate progress, identify problem areas, evaluate alternatives, and determine viable solutions
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of engineering, procurement, and construction processes.
- Must possess strong management and organizational skills.
- The incumbent must possess the skills to balance customer satisfaction priorities with those deriving from project restraints.
- Ability to work successfully and build relationships across operating companies.
