Position Overview:

Ameresco is looking for a Project Engineer to join our team East O&M Team. The Project Engineer will support the Office of Mental Health’s comprehensive Energy Efficiency and Pollution Program (CEEP) based in either Buffalo, West Seneca, or Rochester, New York.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead system-wide energy assessments, benchmarking, and ASHRAE Level I–III audits to identify energy efficiency, electrification, and infrastructure renewal opportunities.

  • Oversee design and construction-phase energy projects, coordinating with project managers, subcontractors, vendors, and facility stakeholders to ensure adherence to scope, schedule, budget, and quality standards.

  • Manage ongoing communication with clients and internal teams, providing project status updates, resolving issues, and addressing schedule delays or construction-related concerns.

  • Direct supply-side and demand-side energy management initiatives, including utility procurement strategies, bill audits, incentives, demand response, and energy monitoring programs.

  • Review, track, and manage project budgets and expenditures; approve invoices and ensure proper purchase orders, contracts, and documentation are in place.

  • Support capital planning by assessing mechanical and electrical system conditions and prioritizing energy-related capital investments.

  • Maintain accurate project and program documentation, including schedules, logs, reports, and customer-facing materials.

  • Foster strong working relationships with customers, subcontractors, utilities, and internal teams throughout all project phases.

  • Manage, coordinate and supervise subcontractors to ensure quality control and that projects installed per design documents, are delivered on time and within budget while meeting or exceeding the customers’ expectations.

  • Evaluate technologies and equipment and recommend most suitable for each application.

  • Provide all necessary support, reports, and documentation required by Management for project, including technical and other support to sales, engineering and operating functions as needed

  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, facility management or energy management fields.

  • Minimum of 3 years of energy management, project engineering, facilities engineering, or energy efficiency program delivery.

  • Demonstrated experience supporting or managing energy-related construction projects, including coordination of subcontractors and site activities.

Additional Qualifications: 

  • Experience with large-scale construction, retrofit, and renovation projects in institutional, government, commercial, or industrial facilities.

  • Exposure to large scale construction projects involving upgrades, renovations, and retrofits involving institutional, government, commercial and industrial customer sites is preferred.

  • Proven ability to manage budgets, schedules, and technical documentation for multiple concurrent projects.

  • Experience analyzing utility data, preparing technical and financial reports, and supporting customer-facing project meetings.

  • Advanced proficiency with MS Office Suite, including Excel and Project.

  • Excellent verbal, written, computer, technical communication and presentation skills required.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and business relationships.

  • Valid Drivers’ License issued by state of residence and in good standing.

  • Local travel required.

The anticipated salary range for this role is $77,000 - $111,500 per year (presented in good faith). In addition to base pay, employees receive a comprehensive benefits package, such as health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off, and may be eligible for performance incentives, bonuses, commissions, or equity, depending on the role.

Actual pay will depend on factors such as internal equity, skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. This range supports our commitment to pay transparency and compliance with applicable laws. Compensation may vary by work location, including remote arrangements.
