JOB DESCRIPTION

What does a Lead Database Engineer do at Green Dot?

Green Dot’s Database Engineering team is responsible for developing transformative next-gen data platforms that enable faster, secure & efficient data solutions. Reporting to the Sr Manager of Database Engineering team, you will contribute to the overall engineering, design, and support of all database implementations leveraging Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL, CosmosDB, AWS Redshift, Databricks, and several other data stores.

Your primary area of responsibility will be focused on designing, modeling and optimizing OLTP related database technologies (RDMBS and NoSQL); and dive deeper with Application Architects and DBAs to build performant applications (with tens of millions of active accounts transacting with more than 1000+ tps). In addition, you’ll be working on Data Warehouse solutions (leveraging AWS Redshift, Databricks and others) to build the performant data movement pipelines across OLTP and OLAP and give complete End-to-End coverage of data lifecycle. However, your primary responsibility remains OLTP focused RDBMS and NoSQL database solutions so make sure you have adequate background on OLTP DB development prior applying for this position. This is NOT a Data Warehouse (or BI/Analytics/ML&AI) focused lead role so please keep this in mind before applying.

As a Lead Database Engineer, you can look forward to:

  • Design and development of various data models associated with Relational DBs (MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or similar) and NoSQL DBs (Cassandra, Cosmos DB, Dynamo DB or similar)

  • Ensuring database features and capabilities are incorporated into data model designs to optimize performance, resiliency, and scalability (with tens of millions of active accounts transacting with more than 1000+ tps)

  • Working closely with other technology leaders to design and develop enterprise-wide data strategy for data modeling, data pipelines, and data integrations across various environments and technology stacks

  • Developing performant data movement pipelines using real-time event data streams (Apache Kafka, Azure Event Hub, AWS Kinesis, Azure Databricks etc.)

  • Designing and implementing performant cloud data warehouse platforms (Redshift, Azure Databricks, SQL DW, Snowflake, or similar)

  • Delivering and presenting proofs of concept to of key technology components to project stakeholders and internal technology leaders

  • Developing the data architecture and governance models for systems of engagement and provides the framework for integrating source systems with the transactional databases and/or data warehouses; Ensuring data architectural designs are consistent, maintainable, flexible, extensible and cost effective

  • Ensuring data security and privacy standards are implemented including- role based security, encryption, tokenization, and obfuscation

  • Performing problem-solving of application issues and production errors, including high level critical production issues that require immediate attention

  • Work with other technology leaders on setting database standards and best practices for designing and architecting cloud-based data and reporting applications

You might be the right match for this role if you:

Have a proven track record in implementing next-gen cloud data solutions and transformation data pipelines for large scale organizations with primary focus around mission critical OLTP related database technologies (RDMBS and NoSQL). You have deep technical skills in a variety of data-related technologies that will contribute to developing and delivering early proofs of concept and production implementation with a “cloud-first mindset”. You have hands-on experience working with high transaction processing customer facing applications that processes more than tens of millions of transactions daily.

Ready to join us in our mission?  These are the qualifications we are looking for:

Required:

  • Minimum 8 years of overall software development experience

  • Minimum 6 years of hands-on experience in database engineering (RDMBS and NoSQL)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer science, Computer Engineering or related field

  • Experience with RDMBS (primarily MS SQL Server); proficiency with advanced SQL concepts (T-SQL, PL/SQL, etc.) that processes millions of transactions daily with very high processing rates to support mission critical databases

  • Good understanding of SQL engine internals to help design and tune databases to get the optimal performance

  • Development experience with NoSQL DBs (Cassandra, Cosmos DB, Dynamo DB or similar); and associated data modeling

  • Experience in designing, developing, and deploying cloud-based solutions which leverage cloud provided platforms (Azure / AWS)

  • Development experience with cloud-based data warehouse platform (Azure Databricks, Azure Synapse, AWS Redshift, Snowflake, etc.)

  • Knowledge of data structures and algorithms and excellent programming skills (.NET, C#, Python and/or Java)

  • Demonstrated expertise in performance tuning in various DB environments with large volume and velocity of data

  • Experience working in a Dev/Ops environment with tools such as Azure Dev Ops, Microsoft Visual Studio Team Services, Chef, Puppet or Terraform

  • Experience in handling structured and semi structured data forms like JSON/XML and normalization of data structures

  • Understanding of OLTP and OLAP applications
