Qualified Students: Ph.D. students graduating in Spring 2027
Opportunity
Chewy is seeking a Research Scientist II Intern in Bellevue, WA or Boston, MA. Combining a background in analytics, data science, and applied research with a curiosity about business operations such as Supply Chain, Fulfillment, and/or Marketing.
Our customer-first mindset and ability to adapt quickly have built an opportunity to rethink and redesign how data-driven insights, optimization, and experimentation inform decision-making across the business. If the opportunity to work on high-impact, large-scale problems, influence business strategy, and drive measurable improvements through advanced analytics intrigues you, we'd love to talk to you!
What You'll Do
Develop and implement models and algorithms to tackle sophisticated business problems using operations research, statistics, and machine learning techniques
  • Analyze large, complex datasets to explain trends, develop insights, and provide actionable recommendations

  • Prototype and evaluate analytical or optimization models (e.g., predictive models, optimization frameworks, experimentation approaches) to support decision-making

  • Partner with cross-functional teams across the business (e.g., Supply Chain, Operations, Marketing, Planning, or related functions) to find opportunities and drive impact

  • Support process improvement initiatives that improve performance, efficiency, and key business metrics

What You'll Need
  • Enrolled full-time in a PhD program in Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Economics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, with an anticipated graduation date of Spring 2027

  • 1+ years of hands-on academic or practical experience developing and deploying optimization, predictive, or machine learning models (experience with reinforcement learning is a plus)

  • Experience applying data science or analytical methods to real-world business problems; exposure to domains such as supply chain, operations, marketing, or customer analytics is preferred

  • Proficiency in Python and SQL

  • Experience with at least one optimization solver or advanced analytical tool (e.g., Gurobi, CPLEX, Xpress, or similar) is a plus

  • Familiarity with collaborative development tools (e.g., Git, Confluence)

  • Ability to translate complex analyses and research into clear, actionable business recommendations

  • Strong ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize competing requirements

  • Ability to understand and apply advanced mathematics and statistics

  • Ability to work 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from June 8, 2026 - August 14, 2026

The hourly range for this role is $50.00.
The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate's relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant. C08+ positions may also be eligible for annual bonus.

We offer parental leave, family services benefits, backup dependent care, flexible spending accounts, telemedicine, pet adoption reimbursement, employee assistance program, and many discounts including 10% off pet insurance and 20% off at Chewy.com.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
