OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION 

The Senior Accountant III plays an important role in the day-to-day financial operations of DH. This is a senior-level individual contributor position for someone with a strong accounting foundation, several years of hands-on experience and the ability to independently manage complex accounting work. 

You will work across general accounting functions including general ledger, banking, client billing, accounts payable and receivable, reconciliations, financial reporting and month-end close. You will also partner with teams across the agency on budgets, forecasting and financial questions while helping maintain strong accounting practices, internal controls and accurate financial records. 

This role is a good fit for someone who knows accounting well and enjoys digging into the details. You’re comfortable identifying and resolving discrepancies, working through complex financial information and taking ownership of your work with limited oversight. You can also explain financial information clearly to people who may not have an accounting background and are willing to share your knowledge and support others on the team. 

Requirements

Must-haves: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience 
  • At least 5 years of accounting or finance experience, including at least 2 years at the senior accountant level or in a role with comparable responsibilities 
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP, general ledger accounting, reconciliations, financial reporting and internal controls 
  • Experience with month-end close and maintaining accurate, audit-ready financial records 
  • Experience managing client billing from contract through invoice, ideally in an agency or professional services setting 
  • Working knowledge of sales tax compliance, including determining what is taxable and preparing returns 
  • Ability to independently identify and resolve accounting discrepancies and recognize when an issue needs to be escalated 
  • Strong Excel skills and comfort working in accounting and financial systems 
  • Strong analytical, math and problem-solving skills with careful attention to detail 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines while consistently producing accurate work 
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to explain financial information to colleagues across the agency 
  • Sound judgment and discretion when working with confidential financial information 
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion principles and the ability to contribute to an inclusive and equitable workplace 

Nice-to-haves: 

  • Experience with Washington’s sales tax on advertising services (ESSB 5814), reseller permits and media pass-through billing 
  • Experience with compliance reporting and supporting external audits 
  • Payroll knowledge and hands-on payroll processing experience 
  • Familiarity with Paylocity, Advantage or similar systems 
  • Background in project-based or professional services accounting 
  • Familiarity with budgeting, forecasting and job-level profitability 
  • Experience improving accounting processes or internal controls 

JOB DUTIES 

  • Manage core accounting functions including general ledger maintenance, banking, accounts payable and receivable, reconciliations and month-end close 
  • Prepare financial reports including income statements, balance sheets, job-level profitability reports and other operational reporting 
  • Manage the monthly client billing cycle, partnering with account teams to deliver accurate and timely invoices 
  • Review billing against client contracts and budgets, resolving questions and discrepancies with account teams and clients 
  • Apply Washington sales tax on advertising services (ESSB 5814) accurately across client jobs and invoices 
  • Stay current on sales tax guidance and help teams understand how it applies to their work 
  • Monitor accounts receivable and follow up on past-due balances with account teams and clients 
  • Work with account and project teams to monitor budgets and job expenses, troubleshoot issues and provide financial guidance 
  • Maintain accurate, organized and audit-ready financial records and support external audits as needed 
  • Contribute to budgeting and forecasting through financial reporting, analysis and ongoing project tracking 
  • Assist with state and local tax filings, payroll-related reporting and other compliance needs 
  • Maintain internal accounting policies, procedures and controls and stay current on relevant accounting standards and requirements 
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, systems and workflows 
  • Partner with HR and operations on payroll, benefits and related financial processes 
  • Provide guidance and support to other accounting team members, including onboarding and sharing knowledge and best practices 
  • Help account and project teams understand financial information and job-level financial health 
  • Participate in ongoing professional learning, agency trainings and cross-team collaboration 
  • Apply social change marketing values and an anti-racism lens to financial practices and agency work

Salary: $83,000 to $103,000, commensurate with experience 

Reports to: Controller 

Office requirements: Hybrid 

DH has offices in Spokane and Seattle, Washington, and we operate as a hybrid workplace. For this role, employees are expected to work in person from either office at least two days per week because we value the collaboration, connection and creativity that comes from spending time together.
