Cascade Asset Management Company (“Cascade”) is proud to protect and grow capital in service of Bill Gates and the Gates Foundation Trust in support of their mission-related and philanthropic activities.  Mr. Gates and the Foundation Trust are committed to creating a world where every person has the opportunity to live a healthy, productive life.

Located in the Seattle area, Cascade applies its fundamental, long-horizon investment approach across asset classes and geographies, primarily through direct investing, as well as through a select group of funds and segregated accounts.  Cascade offers the unique blend of being part of a team that manages a multi-billion-dollar portfolio while also working with professionals in a culture that values intellectual curiosity, collaboration, and respect.

The Team
Our 11-person Finance team is responsible for overseeing accounting operations for Cascade, maintaining accounting systems, executing and improving our financial processes and internal controls, supporting our investment professionals, and providing financial analysis and reporting.
We pride ourselves on delivering stellar work to the organization while fostering an atmosphere of connection, belonging, and fun!
We operate in a hybrid work environment, with three in-office and two remote workdays per week.

The Position
Finance’s accountants are a savvy bunch who handle the core accounting responsibilities at Cascade.   You know your accounting principles and accounting processes end to end. You will own the accounting responsibilities for Cascade’s primary operating entity as well as other investment holding companies. You’ll also oversee the importing and reconciliation of externally-produced financial information into Cascade’s accounting system, and then make your own impact by expanding the recent automated process to import annual budgets.

Every day is a new challenge, and you’re continually looking for ways to help our team become more efficient and effective.  A team player at heart, you collaborate with our internal customers, advocate best practices, and pitch in where needed.  You move fast while keeping your attention to detail, and you tap into your problem-solving skills to support our business objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform end-to-end accounting activities for Cascade’s main operating entity and several investment holding companies. This includes recording revenue and expense accruals, reviewing invoices for appropriate GL coding, and performing monthly general ledger closing activities
  • Oversee all accounting activities related to the organization’s capital expenditures, which includes corporate fixed assets as well as capital expenditures of several real estate investments. This involves recording the recurring accounting entries, maintaining the separate fixed-asset tracking system, and performing periodic account reconciliations
  • Own the preparation and delivery of financial reporting to internal clients, such as variance reporting and capital expenditure budget/actual analyses, while also preparing comprehensive annual tax packages to support accurate and timely tax return filings
  • Manage the reconciliation, preparation, and delivery of the quarterly spend report, a key financial deliverable that provides leadership with clear, actionable insights into Cascade’s expenditures, supporting strategic decision-making and accountability
  • Elevate the quality and professionalism of financial reporting processes to ensure full GAAP compliance, driving increased accuracy, transparency, and strategic insight for internal and external stakeholders
  • Prepare and submit various state and local tax filings (i.e., B&O, personal property, sales/use tax)
  • Lead all aspects of Finance’s primary banking activities, such as reviewing and posting daily cash activity, and performing bank reconciliations
  • Collect, import, and reconcile externally-managed accounting data for certain real estate investments into Cascade’s accounting system
  • Identify and implement process changes that increase the effectiveness of Finance’s internal controls
  • Perform limited backup support for AP/payment processing when the dedicated AP specialist is out

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting is required; CPA or CPA-candidate a plus
  • 5-8 years of relevant accounting experience
  • Proficient knowledge of GAAP principles
  • Very strong Excel skills
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and a demonstrated commitment to quality/accuracy
  • Intellectually curious and driven to be a problem-solver
  • Pro-active, self-motivated, with ability to multi-task and work independently in a hybrid environment
  • Adaptable and willing to take on new responsibilities, learn new skills, and support evolving team needs as they arise
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills
  • Highest level of professionalism and integrity
  • Familiarity with Yardi accounting system, CCH fixed asset software, and PowerBI a plus
  • Knowledge or experience with the real estate or financial services industry a plus

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
