Quick take: Axios is hiring an experienced audience specialist to grow our web audience and spearhead key initiatives to attract and retain key Axios reader segments.

Why it matters: This person will be an integral piece of our daily coverage and will ensure that Axios is meeting the demands of readers across different platforms, including search, social media and newsletters.

  • You have instincts for what content will travel on different distribution platforms.
  • You understand the differences in how users engage with web vs. newsletter content and will make daily decisions to shape our coverage to meet those needs.
  • You have experience writing different types of news stories — breaking news, explainers and quick hits.

Responsibilities:

  • Leverage Axios distribution channels — from social media platforms to partnerships with news apps —in thoughtful and creative ways to get Axios journalism seen by as many readers as possible.
  • Write stories to serve various reader needs — from breaking news to researched reader-service explainers
  • Work with specific Axios verticals and reporters to grow the performance for those topics and authors.
  • Interpret, contextualize and communicate actionable performance data to editors for those verticals.
  • Identify stories that will resonate with Axios audiences, and work with editors to bring them to life.
  • Project manage ad hoc initiatives with a clear goal

Skills:

  • A newshound who stays up to speed on the country’s top stories and is eager to share the latest development with the world.
  • Possesses strong writing and editing skills
  • Hungry and ambitious to make an impact in a fast-moving, sophisticated newsroom
  • Possesses an advanced understanding of the key social media ecosystems for news: grasps the different ways that information travels and gets how news can be shaped for each platform.
  • Data-driven — able to interpret and respond to performance metrics, with necessary context and nuance.
  • Adaptable and diplomatic in pursuing goals while managing relationships with internal stakeholders on various editorial teams.

Starting salary for this role is in the range of $66,000 - $85,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation and benefits. Axios' compensation philosophy takes into account cost of labor differentials across the country. Because this is a remote-optional job posting, this salary range takes into account all possible locations within the United States, but candidates will only be eligible for the salary range for their location.

What Axios brings to the table besides salary:

  • 401(k) with employer match
  • Robust PPO and High Deductible health insurance options on the Blue Cross Blue Shield network
  • Employer Health Savings Account (HSA) contribution for the high deductible health plan option

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
