Who we are

Metropolis is an artificial intelligence company that uses computer vision technology to enable frictionless, checkout-free experiences in the real world. Today, we are reimagining parking to enable millions of consumers to just "drive in and drive out." We envision a future where people transact in the real world with a speed, ease and convenience that is unparalleled, even online. Tomorrow, we will power checkout-free experiences anywhere you go to make the everyday experiences of living, working and playing remarkable - giving us back our most valuable asset, time.

Who you are

Metropolis is seeking a Senior Camera Systems Engineer to drive current and future camera system requirements and designs and enable scaled manufacturing and deployment.  We are developing a broad suite of technologies that enable the operation of our CV/ML platform, including but not limited to camera and computer vision systems, edge and embedded computers, IoT sensors and automated access control systems. As a senior member of the Advanced Technologies (AT) organization, you will be responsible for working up and down the camera stack, providing requirements and designs at the optics and CMOS level, working with team members to implement the ISP and processing pipeline, and ensuring field applications are understood and addressed by our imaging solutions. You will collaborate cross-functionally with members of the Hardware, Embedded Software, Machine Learning and Technical Operations teams to shepherd camera systems from inception through to scaled production.

The right candidate will be comfortable working at all levels of camera system development - performing detailed analysis at the optics/sensor level, tuning ISP settings, driving alignment with hardware and software integrations, engaging with manufacturing teams, and even getting ahead of application and environmental considerations that impact deployment.  You must be able to thrive and succeed in an entrepreneurial environment, working collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders.  You won’t be afraid to break new technological ground at Metropolis and are more than willing to roll up your sleeves, dig in, and get the job done.  If you have a background in cameras, sensors, computer vision or autonomous systems, and are interested in developing systems that go out into the real world, please reach out!

What you'll do
  • Generate camera and camera system requirements that support business objectives, and develop camera system designs based on detailed systems and tradeoff analyses
  • Decompose camera system requirements for dissemination to contributing teams, including metric definition and measurement approaches
  • Work cross-functionally with hardware, machine learning, embedded software, technical operations and manufacturing teams to design, develop and deploy camera solutions to Metropolis facilities
  • Support camera system design and validation processes, including manufacturing and test / calibration
  • Perform optical and camera system simulations / tests as required to quantify and validate proposed solutions
  • Work with partners to enable manufacturing of designed camera systems, including establishing test and validation processes and criteria
  • Work with vendors of cameras and optical devices/components to evaluate their capabilities against our needs and specify our requirements to them
  • Create, utilize, and maintain a camera lab for evaluating new vision technologies and to use as part of a larger QA process for maintaining the integrity of our camera designs
  • Support troubleshooting of field-deployed systems
What we're looking for
  • MS or PhD in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Imaging Science or equivalent
  • 5+ years of industry experience working with imaging systems
  • Deep understanding of camera technologies, optical systems, and imaging pipelines
  • Practical experience with optics, image sensor and pixel fundamentals, and camera construction and assembly.
  • Hands on experience with imaging system test and validation systems, including measurement of traditional and product specific image quality metrics.
  • Production experience with end-to-end imaging processing pipeline, including HDR and image quality modules.
  • Proven track record of productizing 3A and ISP algorithms and settings tailored to camera use cases
  • Familiarity with computer vision and machine learning fundamentals, including algorithm development, modeling and optimization.
  • Experience performing data analysis and automation to yield actionable insights
  • Delivered at least one camera system from concept to mass production
  • Experience with at least one relevant modern programming language (Python, etc.)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences
  • Role is hybrid on-site in Seattle, WA
While not required, these are a plus:
  • Previous experience working inside innovative, high-growth environments is a plus

When you join Metropolis, you’ll join a team of world-class product leaders and engineers, building an ecosystem of technologies at the intersection of parking, mobility, and real estate. Our goal is to build an inclusive culture where everyone has a voice and the best idea wins. You will play a key role in building and maintaining this culture as our organization grows.
