Who we are:
Want to make an impact? Join our pack and come work (and play!) with us.

We believe everyone deserves the unconditional love of a pet—and at Rover, our mission is to make it easier to experience that love. Founded in 2011, the Rover app and website connect dog and cat parents with loving pet sitters and dog walkers in neighborhoods across the US, Canada, and Europe. We empower our community of trusted pet sitters and dog walkers to run their own pet care businesses on Rover with the tools and security of a global company to back them.

Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, we work closely with our teams in Barcelona, San Antonio, Spokane, and remote locations. We’ve got a reputation for being a great place to work, having been named among the 100 Best Companies to Work For in Seattle Business Magazine and Washington’s Best Workplaces in the Puget Sound Business Journal. We're an agile, fast-growing company, and our leadership comes from some of the world's most respected tech companies.

At Rover, our furry coworkers are just as important as our human ones—and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Along with making the joys of pet parenthood more accessible, we’re committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming community of pet people—and that starts with our employees.

Who we’re looking for:
Rover is seeking a seasoned in-house attorney to join our legal team as a Counsel III (Senior Counsel). This is a highly visible, fast-paced role with responsibilities that span both commercial  and product counseling. The ideal candidate is a pragmatic, solutions-oriented advisor who can move quickly to help teams close deals and ship features while managing legal risk thoughtfully and at scale.

Strategic Partnerships:
You will serve as the primary legal partner for Rover’s strategic partnerships, working closely with Business Development, Procurement, and other stakeholders to structure, negotiate, and execute agreements that drive growth while managing risk. We are looking for an experienced negotiator who can differentiate between theoretical and material risk and translate legal issues into actionable business decisions.

Contracts:
In this hands-on role, you will draft and negotiate a wide variety of agreements, including master services agreements, SaaS agreements, promotion and co-marketing arrangements, data protection addenda, licenses, vendor contracts, and more.

Product Counseling:
You will translate the complex legal compliance requirements governing e-commerce marketplaces into concise practical guidance for product teams, helping them design user flows and product functionalities that are clear, compliant, and trusted by customers.
If you are an experienced in-house product and commercial counsel who thrives in a fast-moving, mission-driven environment, we want to hear from you!

This is a hybrid position that currently has the minimum expectation to work out of our downtown Seattle headquarters two days per week on Mondays and Thursdays.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Partnerships: Lead the drafting and negotiation of a wide variety of commercial agreements, ensuring the terms align with Rover’s business goals and risk tolerance.
  • Contracting Process Optimization: Build and maintain contract templates and legal playbooks. Explore the use of scaling mechanisms and AI to streamline the contracting function responsibly and effectively.
  • Product Counseling: Identify the legal and regulatory considerations of proposed product features. Guide teams to make smart decisions that balance speed, user experience, and legal exposure.

Your Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Licensed in a US state; if outside Washington, eligible for in-house admission in Washington
  • 12-14 years of legal practice, with significant experience in-house at a technology company, gig economy business, or e-commerce marketplace.
  • Expert Negotiator: Proven track record of handling commercial transactions ranging from day-to-day contracts to business-critical strategic partnerships.
  • Skilled Cross-functional Collaborator: This is a highly collaborative individual contributor role.  The ability to earn the trust of your legal and non-legal stakeholders alike by explaining complex principles succinctly and providing options for unblocking growth initiatives.
  • E-commerce Legal Experience: Substantial experience advising tech product teams, with at least a working knowledge of consumer protection laws and the regulatory environment surrounding privacy and artificial intelligence.
  • Operational Mindset: Ability to prioritize a high volume of projects in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
  • Practical and Results-Oriented: The ability to summarize key obligations and risks clearly and develop practical solutions with business stakeholders is essential.
  • Exceptional Communication: Reliable and responsive, providing calm, steady communication under time pressure and in contentious scenarios.
  • Ruthless Time Management: Skilled at prioritizing the highest-value legal work and focusing effort on the deal points and product risks that matter most.
  • High Judgment, Low Ego: This role requires the confidence to make high-judgment decisions in real time and the ability to provide common sense legal advice and decide when to escalate versus when to make a call and move on. Team oriented.

Benefits of working at Rover:

  • 401k match
  • Company Equity
  • Flexible PTO
  • Competitive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Commuter benefits
  • Bring your dog to work (and unlimited puppy time)
  • Doggy benefits, including $1,000 toward adopting your first dog
  • Stocked fridges, coffee, soda, and lots of treats (for humans and dogs)
  • Free catered lunches semi-monthly

Compensation:

  • In the Greater Seattle Area the first-year salary range is $182,290-$242,446. Additionally, Rover offers a long-term incentive plan with a company performance-based cash payout and benefits to full-time employees.
  • The cash compensation offered for this role will be dependent on the candidate's experience, qualifications, skills, and abilities as demonstrated in the interview and hiring process.

We believe the best business outcomes come from a diverse set of perspectives and we’re committed to promoting an inclusive, inventive, and fun environment with amazing employees. What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
