This position is a hybrid role requiring employees to work from our headquarters location in Seattle, WA every Tuesday and Wednesday, and remote all other days.

Hybrid from Seattle is the preferred location but this role is open to fully remote candidates.

Redfin is revolutionizing the $75 billion real estate industry. We use data, beautiful software, and innovative design to put customers first at every step in the home-buying and selling process. Get ready to dive headfirst into our award-winning website and mobile apps, solving complex business problems in a highly visible, customer-centric way. If you value doing great work in a collaborative environment, join our team!

The Applied Machine Learning group at Redfin works towards redefining real estate in the customer’s favor using machine learning. We work on foundational problems in the real estate space including recommendations (“Where should I live?”) and price estimation (“How much is a home worth?”). The Brokerage Recommendations product alone, which we power drives 27% of all traffic to Redfin platforms. We have real estate data at a national level and work across various domains in machine learning using large-scale multi-modal property data (documents, images, text, video, 3D scans etc.). Our team also owns and maintains end-to-end production-grade large-scale machine learning infrastructure and systems serving hundreds of millions of consumers.

As a Senior Software Engineer embedded on the Applied Machine Learning Team, you’ll architect the heavy-duty infrastructure that powers our entire ML ecosystem, using Kubernetes and Terraform to build a foundation capable of processing millions of records every minute. By engineering high-reliability data pipelines and Tier 1 APIs, you’ll provide the rock-solid platform our team needs to deploy and scale world-class models with absolute confidence.

The Role:

  • Architect High-Scale ML Infrastructure: Engineer the machine learning backend and data pipelines that power a brokerage platform with 7x the traffic of our closest competitor, directly scaling solutions for millions of users.

  • Drive Revenue-Critical Innovation: Design and deploy high-impact data products and analytical tools that move the needle on Redfin’s most vital business metrics and top-line revenue growth.

  • Revolutionize the Home-Buying Experience: Build the features that redefine how people buy and sell homes, translating complex data into seamless, life-changing user experiences.

  • Champion System Resilience: Act as a critical line of defense by spearheading debugging and incident recovery efforts, ensuring the 24/7 reliability of our mission-critical services.

  • Level-Up Engineering Excellence: Act as a force multiplier for the team by identifying efficiency bottlenecks and evangelizing technical learnings across the broader Redfin engineering organization.

  • Lead Modernization & Best Practices: Maintain a cutting-edge tech stack by integrating industry-leading tooling for observability, logging, and automated deployment.

  • Own the Full Data Product Lifecycle: From inception to production, you’ll build the analytical engines that empower data-driven decision-making at every level of the company.

Who You Are:

  • You have 5+ years of software engineering experience, with a primary focus on distributed systems and data platform architecture.

  • You possess deep expertise in AWS (S3, Kinesis, DynamoDB, SageMaker), data engineering (database, pipelines, ETL, and large-scale data processing), and have professional experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or CloudFormation) and Kubernetes.

  • You have a proven track record of building "Tier 1" data pipelines using Kafka, Airflow, and Spark that are capable of processing millions of records per minute with high reliability.

  • You are highly proficient in Python and familiar with SQL. While you are not responsible for building models, you understand the data requirements for libraries like NumPy and Pandas to ensure the platform effectively supports ML workloads.

  • You have experience implementing monitoring and observability for complex systems (e.g., CloudWatch, Grafana, Datadog) and are comfortable participating in an on-call rotation for mission-critical services.

  • You act as a technical leader who can design system architectures from scratch and mentor the team on engineering best practices, including CI/CD, testing, and documentation.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive compensation packages with a salary, bonuses, and restricted stock grants.

  • Generous benefits, including paid vacation, medical, dental, and vision insurance, and fully paid family leave.

  • A high-growth company, providing opportunities for continued professional development and growth.

Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Colorado, New York City, New Jersey, Jersey City, California, D.C. and Washington candidates only:

Base Pay Range: $150,800.00 - 203,900.00.

The position may also be eligible for an annual bonus, incentives, and other employment-related benefits including, but not limited to, medical, dental, and vision benefits, 401K retirement plan, and paid time off. More information regarding these benefits and others can be found here. The information regarding compensation and other benefits included in this paragraph is only an estimate and is subject to revision from time to time as the Company, in its sole and exclusive discretion, deems appropriate. The Company may determine during its review of the proposed compensation and benefits provided for this position that the compensation and benefits for such position should be reduced. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
