The Washington Post is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to support the site’s rendering web engine, design system and content delivery. This role builds and supports applications that enable purchasing Washington Post content around the world. This role requires a close relationship with the newsroom’s editorial staff and its publishing systems.

How You'll Support The Mission

  • Deliver value to our users by implementing features and maintaining applications across our stack.

  • Ensure high-quality, maintainable code by writing clean, performant, and well-documented software and regularly reviewing colleagues’ code.

  • Engage with your fellow engineers to create and maintain a dynamic and scalable architecture.

  • Understand our cloud infrastructure, AWS, experiment and learn how it supports our implementations.

  • This role requires limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule is on a rotating basis and will be determined a couple of months after you join, taking into account team size and other variables.

The Skills and Experience You Bring
It’s okay not to meet 100% of these requirements! We’re primarily looking for people who meet some of these requirements and are motivated to learn new technologies and expand their skill set.

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, an equivalent field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • A minimum of 5 years of professional software development experience in a team setting.

  • Proficiency in React, JavaScript, TypeScript, and modern front-end development technology and best practices.

  • Experience working with Python.

  • Comfort with command line (Unix & Linux) navigation and revision tracking (Git)

  • Knowledge about DevOps technologies such as Docker and Jenkins.

  • Knowledge of Amazon Web Services (AWS) such as S3, EC2, ELB, SES, and CloudWatch.

  • Experience writing unit and integration tests to ensure code quality.

  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills.

Benefits may vary based on the job, full-time or part-time schedule, location, and collectively bargained status.

The salary range for this position is:

$119,700 - $199,300 Annual

The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
