About the Role
Wells Fargo is seeking a Lead Market Risk Officer to join the Investment Portfolio Risk Oversight (IPRO) team within Finance Risk Management. This role sits in the second line of defense and reports to the Market Risk Senior Manager. The position provides independent risk oversight of the firm's Investment Portfolio, with responsibility for assessing new investment strategies, portfolio initiatives, and risk tradeoffs, while ensuring alignment with firmwide policies, governance, and risk appetite.
This is a highly visible role requiring strong technical market risk expertise, sound judgment, and executive-level communication skills. You will partner closely with senior leaders and stakeholders across Independent Risk, Business Units, Treasury, Finance, Operations, Control, and Audit.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead independent risk assessments for new investment strategies, portfolio changes, and strategic initiatives, providing effective challenge and ensuring alignment across risk disciplines (market, credit, liquidity, and others).
- Recommend and oversee risk appetite metrics, limits, and thresholds aligned to the Investment Portfolio; proactively escalate emerging risks through established governance forums.
- Review, assess, and present new investment strategies to senior management and risk committees; prepare executive- and committee-level risk reporting, including enhancements to board-level materials.
- Ensure strong governance, documentation, and control discipline, including adherence to policies and procedures and readiness for audits and regulatory examinations.
- Provide technical leadership across market, interest rate, and counterparty risk activities, including oversight of complex models and analytics.
- Research and evaluate new products, strategies, and analytical techniques to ensure risks are appropriately identified, measured, and governed.
- Partner with senior management, committees, and the board on market risk topics, strategy assessments, and model governance.
- Mentor and coach junior team members, fostering strong risk culture and analytical capability within the team.
- 5+ years of experience in one or a combination of the following: trading, portfolio management, capital markets, market risk, liquidity risk, interest rate risk or equivalent demonstrated through work experience, training, military experience, or education
- 5+ years of experience in risk management and/or portfolio management within a front-line business or Independent Risk Management (IRM) environment.
- Demonstrated experience analyzing and managing risk across complex fixed income and structured products, including MBS, ABS, municipal bonds, and derivatives.
- Strong knowledge of fixed income securities and portfolio analytics, including market value and P&L dynamics.
- Advanced analytical and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information, identify key risks, evaluate financial impacts, and develop clear, actionable recommendations.
- Proven executive-level communication skills, including experience presenting analysis and risk perspectives to senior management.
- Demonstrated ability to operate with high attention to detail and accuracy in a complex, fast-paced, and highly regulated environment.
- Strong leadership, collaboration, and proactive risk management capabilities.
- Familiarity with enterprise risk policies, procedures, and relevant regulatory guidance.
- Ability to work independently while building effective relationships across functions and stakeholder groups.
