Overview

Tonal’s Senior Manager, Business Systems Engineering will lead a small and mighty team of Integrations Developers and Business System Administrators responsible for building, operating and supporting Tonal's core business systems. You’ll be a hands-on technical leader - setting the engineering standard for how the team designs, builds, tests and ships integrations and system solutions, while also managing the people and priorities behind the work. This role delivers a connected, end-to-end system landscape as Tonal scales into new areas, including healthcare. Tonal is at an exciting turning point, rearchitecting our systems for scale and expanded business models - which offers an opportunity to lead a transformational system initiative, paving the way for future company scalability.

You will partner closely with stakeholders across the business to shape the technical roadmap, uphold engineering best practices, ensure delivery quality and system reliability, and grow a high-performing technical team. This role reports to the Senior Director, Business Systems.

What You Will Do

  • Lead and develop a team of Integrations Developers and Business System Administrators, setting clear technical direction and creating opportunities for career development

  • Own the team's engineering practices — code review standards, testing, CI/CD, and documentation — raising the bar for quality and maintainability across integrations and business systems work

  • Own the technical roadmap for business systems, partnering with stakeholders and senior leadership to translate business requirements into sound technical designs, including integration architecture, system configuration, and data models

  • Guide the team through the full development lifecycle: requirements analysis, technical design, build, testing, and release, including diagrams, workflows, and specifications

  • Run team rituals (sprint planning, standups, retros, backlog grooming) and manage delivery timelines

  • Serve as the primary technical contact and escalation point and for MuleSoft, Salesforce, NetSuite, and custom-developed solutions, providing guidance to the team and business stakeholders

  • Build monitoring, alerting, and maintenance into standard engineering practice to proactively identify issues, protect data integrity, and optimize performance in production

  • Define scalable support request intake process, and drive resolution of production issues, leading root-cause analysis and closed-loop fixes across integrations and administered systems

  • Manage matrixed offshore team and professional services engagements, ensuring appropriate resourcing, skillsets, async execution and budget

  • Define and track engineering success metrics (delivery velocity, quality, system reliability) for the team

  • Own budget, vendor, and resourcing decisions, and communicate tradeoffs clearly to senior stakeholders and executive leadership

  • Build team capability for the long term — scaling structure, processes, and skillsets as scope grows

Who You Are

  • 5+ years of experience managing engineering or technical teams, ideally including Integrations Developers and/or Business Systems Administrators (Salesforce, NetSuite, or similar)

  • Deep technical background with hands-on development or architecture experience — you can go deep with your team on design and code, not just manage from a distance

  • Solid software engineering fundamentals, with hands-on experience in a back-end language such as Java; you are comfortable reviewing and contributing to production code

  • Hands-on experience with MuleSoft or a similar iPaaS platform, with a track record of architecting integration solutions at scale

  • Experience with software development best practices: Agile/scrum, CI/CD, code review, and structured release and change management.

  • Proven ability to establish and run software quality processes in an ERP/CRM landscape, defining and owning test strategy, UAT, environment/sandbox management with automated testing applied where the platform supports it (e.g. MuleSoft MUnit, Salesforce Apex test classes)

  • Experience administering or architecting on NetSuite in a production environment.

  • A track record of recruiting, mentoring, and growing engineers, with strong people management skills

  • Efficient, organized, and detail-oriented, with strong follow-through on commitments

  • Self-motivated and always learning, staying current with new tools, patterns, and platforms

  • Excellent communicator and active listener, comfortable questioning assumptions and digging into root causes

  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity, exercising sound judgment when priorities shift or requirements are incomplete

  • Comfortable working with operational and integration data at volume, structuring data sets across connected systems.

  • Not afraid to roll up your sleeves — this role blends strategic ownership with hands-on problem solving when the moment calls for it

At Tonal, we believe that the unique and varied lived experiences of our teammates contribute to our overall strength. We don’t just appreciate differences, we celebrate them, and we always seek people that represent a wide variety of backgrounds. We’re dedicated to adding new perspectives to the team and designing employee experiences that contribute to your growth as much as you do to ours. What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
