Location: Remote - open to candidates inside USA ONLY

Role Type: Fulltime Contractor

Reports to: Day to day, you will work closely with Software Engineers, Quality Engineers, Product Managers, Designers, and other stakeholders, contributing across the full software development lifecycle.

The opportunity

Our client in healthcare technology is looking for a Software Engineer (AWS) to build and support secure, scalable, and accessible software for a healthcare platform serving patients and providers across the U.S. The role will own features end-to-end, contribute to technical decisions, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable production solutions.

About the organization

Our client is a healthcare technology client operating a telemedicine platform across all 50 U.S. states. The name will be shared with shortlisted candidates before the client interview.

What you will do
  • Partner with Product, Design, Quality Engineering, and other stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into practical technical solutions.

  • Contribute to the design and development of software components, applications, services, and integrations across the platform.

  • Build and maintain production software across the full stack, currently using React, TypeScript, Python/Flask, PostgreSQL, and AWS.

  • Develop accessible, intuitive web experiences in React, working closely with Product and Design to translate UI concepts into production-ready interfaces.

  • Design and implement APIs and third-party integrations while maintaining and improving existing integrations and partnerships.

  • Design, deploy, and maintain cloud infrastructure and services on AWS (e.g., EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, CloudWatch), ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, and cost-effective.

  • Take ownership of features and initiatives across the full development → testing → deployment → launch lifecycle, including cloud deployment pipelines.

  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-structured code that other engineers can understand, extend, and support.

  • Develop and maintain unit and integration tests to validate functionality and protect product quality.

  • Participate in and lead technical design discussions and peer reviews, helping the team make sound engineering decisions.

  • Review pull requests and provide constructive technical feedback that improves code quality, consistency, and maintainability.

  • Investigate, debug, and resolve significant software defects and production issues across the application, including cloud infrastructure issues.

  • Identify technical risks in larger initiatives and work with the team to address them early.

  • Break larger technical initiatives into manageable tasks and help establish practical implementation plans.

  • Apply appropriate software design patterns and architectural approaches to solve complex engineering problems.

  • Contribute to technical specifications, implementation documentation, validation plans, and other engineering documentation.

  • Help improve engineering processes and establish repeatable software patterns, including AWS-based infrastructure-as-code practices, that make development more efficient and reliable.

  • Mentor and support other engineers when needed, contributing to the overall growth and technical standards of the team.

  • Communicate technical concepts, decisions, risks, and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Requirements What you bring
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience preferred, with a track record of building and supporting production software.

  • Strong hands-on experience with React and TypeScript, including building maintainable and accessible web applications.

  • Professional experience with Python, ideally using Flask or a similar web framework.

  • Strong experience working with PostgreSQL or other relational databases.

  • Hands-on experience with AWS (e.g., EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, CloudWatch) or a comparable cloud platform, including deploying and maintaining production workloads.

  • Strong understanding of HTML and CSS and how they contribute to accessible, reliable web experiences.

  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining REST APIs and third-party integrations.

  • Experience writing and maintaining unit and integration tests.

  • Strong understanding of software design principles, patterns, and maintainable application architecture.

  • Experience participating in code reviews and providing constructive technical feedback to other engineers.

  • Ability to own features through the full development → deployment → launch lifecycle and provide production support when needed.

  • Ability to review existing code and designs, identify weaknesses, and make improvements to efficiency, maintainability, and scalability.

  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, including the ability to investigate and resolve significant production issues, including in cloud environments.

  • Ability to break complex technical initiatives into smaller, actionable tasks and contribute to implementation planning.

  • Experience writing technical specifications, implementation documentation, and validation plans.

  • Ability to work effectively with Product, Design, Quality Engineering, and other cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts and trade-offs clearly to non-technical audiences.

  • Willingness and ability to mentor and support other engineers and contribute to raising the team's overall engineering standards.

Helpful, but not essential
  • AWS certification (Certified Developer or Solutions Architect – Associate).

  • Experience working in healthcare technology, telemedicine, or another regulated industry.

  • Experience building patient-facing, clinician-facing, or other high-trust applications.

  • Experience working with accessibility standards and accessible web applications.

  • Experience working in a high-growth startup or product environment.

  • Experience with Agile/Scrum development methodologies.

  • Experience working on systems involving sensitive or regulated user data.

How the engagement works

  • The hiring process begins with a conversation with the client to discuss your experience, technical background, and mutual expectations.

  • Candidates then complete a short, scoped technical exercise designed to reflect the type of practical engineering work they would encounter in the role.

  • The final stage is a technical interview with the engineering team focused on software architecture, problem-solving, hands-on development experience, and technical judgment.

For a contractor engagement, your work will be based on the agreed scope and deliverables. You are expected to provide your own laptop and basic equipment, maintain reliable connectivity and a secure working environment, and follow required security controls, including two-factor authentication.

Any client-provided specialized equipment, leave, stipend, wellbeing benefit, or other support will be stated separately as an approved exception.

If you contract through Apricot, planned check-ins are [month 1 and month 3 / other approved cadence] to see how the engagement is working and help address issues.
