This role is part of Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin’s mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. The team fosters innovation and drives engineering workflows of the future, shared solutions and standards, simplicity and lower costs, and manufacturable design.

As a Platform Avionics Software Engineer, you’ll be part of a highly skilled group responsible for developing platform software and tools for a wide variety of spaceflight systems. You'll play a vital role in the design, architecture, and implementation of safety-critical real-time embedded software as part of Blue Origin’s Avionics Center of Excellence. Our work enables all Blue Origin business units to routinely transport people and payloads to orbit and beyond.

In this position, you will:

  • Design, develop, and maintain platform software for embedded avionics systems, such as device drivers, middleware, and application software
  • Collaborate with hardware and systems engineers to define software requirements and ensure interoperability with varied hardware platforms
  • Participate in architecture and design discussions for embedded systems
  • Optimize and implement software for performance, scalability, and portability
  • Thoroughly test, debug, and analyze software performance on different hardware
  • Prepare and update documentation, such as requirements, design specifications, and API references
  • Review code and offer feedback to team members for continuous improvement
  • Work cross-functionally to integrate avionics platform software into a range of products

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • At least 10 years of experience in low-level and embedded software development
  • Proficient in C/C++ programming
  • Deep understanding of real-time concepts, multitasking, synchronization, and inter-process communication in embedded environments
  • Experience with hardware abstraction, device drivers, and low-level interfaces
  • Skilled in software development for various hardware architectures (such as ARM, x86), including porting and optimization
  • Familiarity with RTOS or Linux-based embedded environments
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and experience in fast-paced, collaborative teams
  • Experience with software architecture and design
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion 
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, CAN) and networking protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, MQTT)
  • Experience in safety-critical software development within aerospace, automotive, or similar industries

 

Compensation Range for:

CO applicants is $163,272.00-$228,579.75;WA applicants is $177,567.00-$248,593.80

  • Required for Certain Job Profiles: Drivers who operate Commercial Motor Vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or combination of power unit and trailer that meets or exceeds 10,001 lbs. and/or transports placardable amounts of hazardous materials by ground in any vehicle on a public road while in commerce, may be subject to additional Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations including: Driver Qualification Files, Medical Certification, Road Test, Hours of Service, Drug and Alcohol Testing (CDL drivers only), vehicle inspection requirements, CDL requirements (if applicable) and hazardous materials transportation/shipping training.
