Who we are

Metropolis is an artificial intelligence company that uses computer vision technology to enable frictionless, checkout-free experiences in the real world. Today, we are reimagining parking to enable millions of consumers to just "drive in and drive out." We envision a future where people transact in the real world with a speed, ease and convenience that is unparalleled, even online. Tomorrow, we will power checkout-free experiences anywhere you go to make the everyday experiences of living, working and playing remarkable - giving us back our most valuable asset, time.

Who you are

We are looking for a Senior Web Engineer to join our Customer Experience application development team and contribute to the next step function growth phase. As a member of the engineering team, you will have the opportunity to design and build systems and features from the ground-up, have a big role to play in defining the direction of our product and mentor other engineers.

The ideal candidate will have a product-oriented mindset with a passion for technology and customer satisfaction. This engineer will play a critical role in the company's success by ensuring that software development efforts are aligned with customer needs and contribute to the company's overall growth and profitability. This is a unique opportunity to build an end-to-end mobility platform that supports high throughput locations, aviation, fleet management and other use cases impacting the everyday experience of millions of people. Specifically, we want to mature our observability, analytics, reporting, and visualizations.

We'd like to re-imagine the end-to-end experience for internal and external users alike. For internal users we need to streamline workflows and surface timely and context-relevant insights. For external users, we want an easy, fluid experience that supports both remote and on-premise workflows – be that at the parking lot, gas station, carwash, or fast food drive-thru.

If you are energized by the mission to empower our customers to harness time through remarkable mobility products, this role is for you. We operate in a fast-paced, challenging, and fun environment! We work together as one team to deliver on our commitments. We challenge the status quo every day, internally and externally.

What you'll do
  • Design, implement, and maintain the frontend systems that make up the Metropolis parking and mobility platform.
  • Collaborate with product managers and designers to model and understand real world problems in our UX.
  • Be a key part of the entire development lifecycle, including ideation and identifying requirements.
  • Moderate technical discussions, evaluate new techniques, and ensure our platform is constantly evolving and improving.
  • Leverage best practices in automation testing and deployment to enable rapid iteration and launch of new features.
  • Help build a culture where bugs and mistakes in production are treated as opportunities to improve the platform.
  • Mentor junior engineers ensuring appropriate use of UI frameworks and component libraries.
What we're looking for
  • MS or BS in Computer Science or equivalent work experience. Strong fundamental computer science skills.
  • 6+ years of software engineering experience. advanced-level knowledge in a modern component-based frontend framework and proficiency with strongly-typed languages.
  • Proven track record of successfully delivering large-scale software products in high volume consumer facing applications.
  • Experience with consuming and interacting with RESTful APIs and gRPC frameworks.
  • Deep understanding of Agile engineering processes that support the entire software development life cycle, including TDD/BDD, CI/CD and related build/test/deploy processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences.
  • Local to Santa Monica (Los Angeles), New York City, or Seattle areas.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of React and Typescript.
  • Work experience in innovative, high-growth environment.
Our Stack
  • Languages + Frameworks: TypeScript, React, Scala (principally), Java (limited)
  • Datastores: MySQL, PostgreSQL, Snowflake
  • Cloud: AWS
  • Version control: Git & GitHub
  • AI Tooling: Copilot on GitHub

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
