Role Overview

We are looking for a skilled Backend Software Engineer to design, develop, and maintain scalable, reliable, and secure applications. The ideal candidate should have strong hands-on experience with Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, databases, and modern deployment practices.

This role will involve a mix of new backend development, enhancement of existing services, production support, and continuous improvement. The engineer will collaborate closely with product owners, QA engineers, DevOps teams, and distributed development teams, including teams based in India.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

In this role, the Software Engineer will work as part of a backend development team responsible for building, enhancing, and supporting Java/Spring Boot-based services.

On a typical day, this person will review business and technical requirements, design and develop REST APIs, write unit and integration tests, participate in code reviews, troubleshoot defects, and collaborate with product owners, QA engineers, DevOps teams, and other developers.

The engineer will contribute to both new feature development and ongoing maintenance of existing backend services. They will help improve application performance, resolve production issues, support deployments through CI/CD pipelines, and ensure services are secure, reliable, and scalable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain backend applications using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Build scalable microservices and RESTful APIs.
  • Implement database solutions using JPA/Hibernate and SQL.
  • Participate in requirement analysis, technical design, estimation, and code reviews.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code following engineering best practices.
  • Develop unit and integration tests using frameworks such as JUnit and Mockito.
  • Containerize and deploy applications using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Build and support CI/CD pipelines for automated build, testing, and deployment.
  • Monitor applications, troubleshoot production issues, and perform root-cause analysis.
  • Collaborate with product owners, QA engineers, DevOps teams, and distributed development teams, including teams based in India.
  • Contribute to technical documentation and continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Skills

  • 3–5 years of hands-on backend development experience.
  • Strong proficiency in Java and object-oriented programming.
  • Good experience with Spring Boot, Spring Framework, and Spring Data JPA.
  • Experience developing RESTful APIs and microservices.
  • Working knowledge of JPA/Hibernate and relational databases such as Oracle or PostgreSQL.
  • Understanding of SQL, database design, and query optimization.
  • Experience with Git and build tools such as Maven or Gradle.
  • Working knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud-based deployments.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD tools and automated deployment pipelines.
  • Experience with unit testing and code-quality practices.
  • Good understanding of software design principles, exception handling, logging, and security.
  • Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with Kafka or another event-streaming/messaging platform.
  • Exposure to Azure or another public cloud platform.
  • Knowledge of API gateways such as APIGEE or Azure API Management.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools such as ELK or New Relic.
  • Understanding of Agile/Scrum development practices.
  • Experience supporting applications in production environments.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
