Job Description:
Our Opportunity
Chewy is seeking a full-stack Software Engineer II to join our Site Analytics Engineering team in Bellevue, WA. In this role, you will design, build, and maintain the applications and services powering Chewy's web and app analytics and experimentation platforms. You'll collaborate closely with storefront engineers and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure seamless integration and high performance across web and mobile platforms.
The Site Analytics Engineering team is responsible for data analytics and experimentation infrastructure - we empower our stakeholders with high quality data services, behavioral (Clickstream) event tracking, and experimentation platform capabilities. As a Software Engineer II, you will help define the technical direction of our event-driven analytics platform and lead the development of scalable, reliable backend systems that enable actionable insights and measurable business impact.
What You'll Do
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable backend systems, APIs, and microservices that power Chewy's internal clickstream analytics, experimentation, and data platforms.
  • Contribute to event-driven architectures using Apache Kafka to support real-time data collection, streaming, and integration, ensuring data accuracy and consistency across analytics pipelines.
  • Implement robust, fault-tolerant data services that ingest, process, and deliver trillions of daily events to downstream systems, supporting operational dashboards, reporting, and experimentation frameworks.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code, and contribute to code reviews, design discussions, and CI/CD best practices to ensure code quality and continuous delivery.
  • Automate infrastructure provisioning using Terraform and Git-based workflows to deploy scalable, containerized applications. Champion infrastructure-as-code best practices across the team.
  • Ensure reliability and performance of critical services through observability (e.g., Datadog, Grafana), active monitoring, and resolution of performance bottlenecks in high-throughput environments.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with frontend engineers, data engineers, data scientists, and product managers to understand requirements and translate them into backend solutions aligned with Chewy's business goals.
  • Drive a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement through documentation, mentorship, and collaboration, while upholding Chewy's standards for data security, compliance, and stakeholder trust.
  • Articulate complex technical ideas (e.g., why a unified metric needs a certain definition, or how a new infrastructure change will reduce latency) to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What You'll Need
  • 4+ years of professional backend software engineering experience, with a proven track record of building and maintaining large-scale systems in data-intensive environments.
  • Ability to work across the entire application stack, from building user-facing interfaces (React, TypeScript, HTML/CSS) to implementing robust server-side logic (Java or Kotlin).
  • Hands-on experience with containerization (Docker/Kubernetes) and deploying services within AWS environments (EC2, ECS, CloudWatch).
  • Experience contributing to the design and leading the implementation of microservices and distributed systems.
  • Proficiency in building event-driven components using Apache Kafka or similar streaming platforms and managing data via SQL/NoSQL databases.
  • Familiarity with modern data stores and query engines like Snowflake, Databricks, or Redshift.
  • Strong ability to perform code reviews, write technical documentation, and collaborate with cross-functional teams (Product, Design, Data).

Nice to Have:
  • Experience building AI-driven applications or integrating modern LLM-based capabilities.
  • Experience with Terraform and observability tools such as Datadog, Dynatrace, CloudWatch, and Grafana.
  • Proficiency in SQL databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) for schema design, query optimization, and data modeling.
  • Previous work on data platforms (Segment, mParticle, Tealium etc), experimentation frameworks (such as Weblab, Statsig, Eppo, Optimizely etc), and site analytics in a high-growth or e-commerce setting.

Join us to build foundational systems that power Chewy's data-driven decisions and elevate our customer experience through analytics and experimentation.
The base salary range for this role is $120,000 - $191,500.
  • The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate's relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant. C08+ positions may also be eligible for annual bonus.

We offer different types of insurance and benefits, such as medical/Rx, vision, dental, life, disability, hospital indemnity, critical illness, and accident. We offer parental leave, family services benefits, backup dependent care, flexible spending accounts, telemedicine, pet adoption reimbursement, employee assistance program, and many discounts including 10% off pet insurance and 20% off at Chewy.com.
Exempt salary team members have unlimited PTO, subject to manager approval. Team members will receive six paid holidays per year. Team members may be eligible for paid sick and family leave in compliance with applicable state and local regulations.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
