About PortX

PortX is a leading integration-platform-as-a-service (iPaaS) company serving banks, credit unions, and core systems. Our platform empowers financial institutions with the “integration toolbox” needed to accelerate innovation, eliminate vendor lock-in, and simplify fintech integration. As we scale our impact and innovation footprint, we’re looking for a hands-on Software Engineering Manager with payment technology experience to lead our payments team with a forward-thinking, AI-augmented approach to engineering productivity.

About the Role

The Software Engineering Manager, Payments at PortX is a high-impact leadership role focused on empowering engineers, enhancing workflows, and maximizing team output through strategic use of AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot etc., automated testing agents, and internal tooling). You will lead a team of engineers and establish world-class software engineering practices while driving adoption of modern tools that increase velocity and code quality. This role blends technical depth, process design, and people leadership with a keen eye toward leveraging AI for real, measurable gains in productivity and team effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities:

AI-Enabled Productivity & Engineering Enablement

  • Champion the use of AI development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, test generators etc.) to augment engineering workflows—from coding and reviews to documentation and testing.
  • Research, evaluate, and implement internal tools and frameworks that integrate AI capabilities for measurable productivity improvements.
  • Design and lead training programs to scale AI development literacy and adoption across the engineering team.
  • Identify and remove productivity bottlenecks using AI-assisted diagnostics and automation.

Engineering Practice Leadership

  • Define and enforce modern software engineering policies, best practices, and standards, including code quality, testing, security, and documentation.
  • Lead design and code reviews with a focus on AI-augmented development.
  • Drive the selection, implementation, and standardization of development tools, automated testing frameworks, and secure coding practices.
  • Establish and evolve a mature Agile SDLC, estimation standards, and project management practices.
  • Define and enforce use of tools such as JIRA, GitHub, CI/CD, and metrics dashboards.

Measurement, Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Define and track key engineering KPIs (velocity, defect rate, cycle time, etc.) with visibility for leadership and team stakeholders.
  • Design systems for measuring and reporting engineering maturity, process adherence, and team productivity.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives based on KPI insights and team feedback.

Team Management & Capacity Planning

  • Directly manage a team of engineers; provide coaching, performance feedback, and career growth opportunities.
  • Collaborate with product and leadership teams to define team structures, project resourcing, and hiring plans.
  • Own the headcount forecasting, budget tracking, and reporting for engineering team allocations across products.
  • Lead and optimize technical interview processes to ensure consistent, high-quality hiring standards.

Skills and Experience:

  • Significant experience in software engineering, engineering management or technical leadership roles, working on payments or core banking technology.
  • Proven experience in defining and scaling engineering processes in agile environments.
  • Demonstrated hands-on expertise with AI developer tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, GPT-powered coding assistants, automated test writers etc.).
  • Strong background in software development, architecture, cloud-native technology (Java, Kubernetes, AWS…).
  • Strong familiarity with cloud-native tools, CI/CD pipelines, code quality automation, and secure development practices.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills; able to manage multiple teams, projects, and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to lead change, influence culture, and align engineering practices to business outcomes.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a track record of cross-functional collaboration across product, engineering, and executive stakeholders.

And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
