Software Development Manager - Topics Core Platform

Why We Have This Role

We are on a mission to retire a legacy interface and replace it with a new Text Analytics platform, a modern, AI-native designer experience for our rule editing software. As the Engineering Manager for this team, you will lead a distributed team of high-caliber engineers across Provo and Seattle to bridge the gap between decades of existing functionality and the future of natural language rule-authoring. You’ll partner closely with UX, Product, and Backend teams to ensure that Discover’s core logic isn't just modernized, but fundamentally transformed through native AI integration.

How You’ll Find Success

  • Technical Depth: You aren't afraid to get into the weeds. You can hold your own in architecture discussions and understand the "how" behind the "what."
  • Decisive Leadership: You lead with clarity, running efficient Scrum processes and challenging developer estimates to ensure the team hits its milestones.
  • People-First Mentality: You find fulfillment in coaching and unblocking direct reports, fostering a high-functioning environment for your engineers.
  • Strategic: You ensure no existing functionality is lost.
  • Collaborative Influence: You build seamless bridges between UX designers, product managers, and backend services to keep the Qualtrics Text Analytics vision unified.

How You’ll Grow

  • AI Integration at Scale: Gain hands-on experience leading the implementation of NLP and AI-driven features in a production enterprise environment.
  • Change Management Mastery: Lead a high-stakes modernization effort that involves shifting user behavior from manual syntax to natural language.
  • Multi-Site Leadership: Refine your ability to manage and culture-build across geographically distributed teams (Provo and Seattle).

Things You’ll Do

  • Modernize the Rule-Editing Experience: Deliver the next generation rules-based Text Analytics project by successfully transitioning the Qualtrics Text Analytics platform from a legacy stack to a modern, AI-infused architecture.
  • Drive Team Velocity: Execute high-functioning Scrum ceremonies, removing bottlenecks and ensuring technical estimates are accurate and ambitious.
  • Elevate Engineering Talent: Manage the career growth and performance of 6-7 engineers, balancing technical mentorship with effective people management.
  • Ensure Feature Parity: Lead the team in a wholesale UX revamp that maintains 100% of existing functionality while adding natural language capabilities.
  • Bridge Cross-Functional Gaps: Align with UX and Product stakeholders to translate a complex modernization vision into actionable technical roadmaps.

What We’re Looking For On Your Resume

  • 4-5 years of People Management experience: You have a proven track record of leading engineering teams through complex delivery cycles.
  • 10+ years of software development experience.
  • Technical Fluency: You have a strong background in software development and can deeply understand the technical details of what your team is building.
  • Preference for Experience with AI/NLP Integration: Ideally, you’ve worked on products that leverage Natural Language Processing or integrated AI natively into the user experience.

What You Should Know About This Team

  • Strong Technical Foundation: You’ll be working with senior engineers who are deeply invested in the architecture and system design.
  • AI-First Innovation: We aren't just "adding" AI as a bolt-on; we are rewriting our core interface to be AI-native from the ground up.
  • High-Touch Collaboration: You’ll have dedicated UX and Product Management resources integrated with the team to ensure we build with a customer first mindset.

Our Team’s Favorite Perks and Benefits

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
