Job Title: Senior Architect – Data Platform & Infrastructure

Job Description:

F5 is seeking a Senior Architect for Data Platform & Infrastructure to define and lead the architecture, design, and evolution of core big data systems supporting analytics, machine learning, security detections, and product intelligence across all F5 platforms. This role is responsible for the design of scalable, resilient, and secure data infrastructure—encompassing storage systems, data pipelines, stream processing frameworks, and foundational data services. You will:

  • Define the cross-platform architecture strategy for data platforms, ensuring consistency, scalability, and performance across SaaS, appliances, and cloud-native services.

  • Guide the evolution of data ingestion, batch and streaming pipelines, data lake and warehouse design, and foundational platform services for data processing.

  • Ensure clean separation between core data infrastructure and telemetry pipelines while enabling consistent, high-quality data capabilities across the company.

  • Partner with product and engineering leadership to align data architecture with long-term business goals, analytics capabilities, and ML initiatives.

  • Evaluate emerging data technologies and paradigms for inclusion in F5’s data platform stack.

  • Participate in cross-functional design projects and roadmap planning, contributing expertise in data engineering and platform design.

  • Mentor and guide engineers and technical leads, instilling architectural best practices and data governance principles across multiple teams.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies and paradigms for inclusion in our architecture.

  • Represent architecture in planning forums, contributing to roadmap prioritization and long-range technical strategy and roadmap.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain reference architectures, design documents, and reusable frameworks for data platform components.

  • Drive technical evaluations, trade-off analyses, and architecture reviews for batch and stream processing systems, storage layers, and data APIs.

  • Identify emerging technologies and frameworks and recommend adoption where impactful.

  • Oversee interoperability and lifecycle management strategies for data systems spanning cloud, edge, and on-premise deployments.

  • Engage with product teams to define scalable, secure, and efficient data processing capabilities supporting product features and internal analytics.

  • Lead data governance efforts including data cataloging, lineage, privacy considerations, and access controls.

  • Document and record architecture decisions, design patterns, and operational considerations for data platform systems.

  • Planning, tracking, and scheduling data platform deliverables in collaboration with engineering leaders.

  • Developing strong working relationships with stakeholders across Engineering, Security, Data Science, and Product Management.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 12+ years of experience in software architecture and engineering, with at least 5 years focused on large-scale data platforms and infrastructure.

  • Deep expertise in distributed data systems including data lakes, warehouses, streaming pipelines, and large-scale storage architectures.

  • Experience designing and implementing batch and real-time data processing frameworks at scale.

  • Proficiency with modern big data technologies and cloud-native data patterns.

  • Experience designing multi-region, multi-tenant data systems with a focus on reliability, performance, and security.

  • Strong understanding of data governance practices including lineage, cataloging, and compliance considerations.

  • Proficiency in programming languages relevant to data engineering.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to clearly articulate architecture decisions to technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Extensive knowledge of the software development process and platform lifecycle management.

  • Strong soft skills, including collaboration, influencing, and mentoring across teams.

What you need to know about the Seattle Tech Scene

Home to tech titans like Microsoft and Amazon, Seattle punches far above its weight in innovation. But its surrounding mountains, sprinkled with world-famous hiking trails and climbing routes, make the city a destination for outdoorsy types as well. Established as a logging town before shifting to shipbuilding and logistics, the Emerald City is now known for its contributions to aerospace, software, biotech and cloud computing. And its status as a thriving tech ecosystem is attracting out-of-town companies looking to establish new tech and engineering hubs.

Key Facts About Seattle Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 287,000; 13% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software, biotechnology, game development
  • Funding Landscape: $3.1 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Madrona, Fuse, Tola, Maveron
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Allen Institute for Brain Science, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle Children’s Research Institute
