Summary
As a Senior Database Administrator on the Product Development and R&D database administration team, you will support and optimize our database platforms while helping migrate Oracle MySQL workloads to AWS Aurora MySQL and SQL Server workloads to Amazon RDS for SQL Server. Your primary focus will be MySQL and Aurora MySQL, including query performance tuning, index design, replication, and day-to-day operations. You will also provide secondary administration and tuning support for SQL Server environments on EC2 and help migrate those workloads to RDS. This role participates in the team’s on-call rotation.
Key Responsibilities
- Query Performance Tuning: Lead query tuning and performance diagnostics on MySQL and Aurora MySQL using EXPLAIN / EXPLAIN ANALYZE, performance_schema, the sys schema, the slow query log, pt-query-digest, and Aurora Performance Insights. Analyze index strategy, buffer pool behavior, and locking to eliminate bottlenecks. Provide the same support on SQL Server using execution plans and Query Store.
- Database Code Refactoring: Refactor and tune stored procedures, functions, views, triggers, and inline queries in MySQL (and SQL Server as needed) to improve execution efficiency, error handling, and transactional throughput.
- Migration to Aurora for MySQL and AWS RDS for SQL Server: Execute schema refactoring, data transformation, and object migrations from Oracle MySQL to Aurora MySQL. Use native methods—including MEB restores from S3, binlog/GTID replication from the external source for cutover, and logical dump/load—where appropriate. Migrate SQL Server workloads to RDS for SQL Server using native backup and restore, and use AWS DMS or SCT when the migration path calls for them. Before cutover, validate compatibility between Oracle MySQL and Aurora MySQL, including versions, parameters, SQL modes, and unsupported features.
- Replication and High Availability: Design, build, and troubleshoot binlog/GTID replication, Aurora replicas, failover behavior, and Multi-AZ configurations on RDS.
- Maintenance and Operations: Share operational ownership of Aurora MySQL and RDS for SQL Server by managing parameter group changes, sizing InnoDB buffer pools, maintaining indexes, upgrading engine versions, configuring backups and point-in-time recovery, and routinely testing restores.
- Monitoring and On-Call: Maintain monitoring and alerting (Performance Insights, CloudWatch, Enhanced Monitoring). Participate in the on-call rotation, responding to production database incidents and following through with root cause analysis.
- Developer Partnership and Code Review: Review queries and schema changes before deployment, promote team standards and MySQL/Aurora indexing best practices, and mentor developers and QA on query tuning.
- Standards and Change Control: Follow and maintain the team’s database standards for naming conventions, indexing, schema design, coding practices, parameter configuration, and change management. Deliver changes through the established review and deployment process and encourage developers and peers to do the same.
- Data Modeling: Translate business requirements into clean, performant relational models, with an emphasis on MySQL.
What You’ll Need to Be Able to Do
- Read a slow query log, identify the offending queries, and explain the fix to a developer.
- Diagnose replication lag, lock contention, and deadlocks on a live system.
- Plan and execute a migration cutover or major version upgrade with a rollback path.
- Restore a database to a point in time and verify that the recovered data and database functionality meet the recovery requirements.
- Work independently and within a team of DBAs, developers, and QA, following established standards and collaborating as needed.
- Communicate clearly in writing and provide timely, concise updates during incidents.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of DBA experience, with primary expertise in MySQL and working knowledge of SQL Server.
- 5+ years of experience tuning query performance, developing index strategies, and analyzing execution plans, primarily in MySQL environments.
- Hands-on experience with MySQL replication (binlog/GTID), failover, and backup/recovery.
- Experience refactoring complex SQL code, including stored procedures, functions, and transactional logic.
- 3+ years of relational data modeling and schema design.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to follow, maintain, and promote documented standards and change control processes.
- Ability to participate in an on-call rotation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing or migrating production workloads to AWS Aurora MySQL.
- Experience administering AWS RDS for SQL Server.
- Experience with AWS DMS and/or SCT.
- Experience with both OLTP and analytical/data warehouse workloads.
- Experience with schema version control and deployment tools (Flyway, Liquibase, Yuniql).
- Experience using PowerShell or Bash to automate health checks and maintenance tasks.
