About Salesforce

Salesforce is the #1 AI CRM, where humans with agents drive customer success together. Here, ambition meets action. Tech meets trust. And innovation isn’t a buzzword — it’s a way of life. The world of work as we know it is changing and we're looking for Trailblazers who are passionate about bettering business and the world through AI, driving innovation, and keeping Salesforce's core values at the heart of it all.

Ready to level-up your career at the company leading workforce transformation in the agentic era? You’re in the right place! Agentforce is the future of AI, and you are the future of Salesforce.

Salesforce's Office of Ethical and Humane Use seeks a Sr. Director of Science and Engineering to lead our Responsible AI efforts in technical testing, evaluation, data science, and engineering. This is a senior technical leadership role tasked with transforming our RAI practice from manual expert reviews to operating scalable, AI-powered automated systems. You will own the technical architecture, scientific rationale, and operational scaling of our RAI systems, ensuring "trustworthy by default" standards across the enterprise.

What You Will Own

As the ultimate technical owner, you lead a team of technical Responsible AI experts (data science, research science, engineering) through a critical transformation:

  • Define the Technical North Star: Develop the 18-24 month roadmap for moving from manual ethics test reviews to automated, AI-powered testing.

  • Architect Production Systems: Build robust infrastructure (e.g., automated intake pipelines, LLM-judge patterns, LLM Council approaches) that can handle Salesforce-scale traffic.

  • Set Scientific Rigor: Establish the research foundations, evaluation metrics, and technical logic for how we test and align AI systems.

  • Influence Cross-Functional Strategy: Partner with technical and product teams to embed RAI into the development lifecycle across business units.

  • People Leadership: Act as a "player-coach," providing technical mentorship, managing performance, and unblocking complex challenges in study design, data analysis, and software engineering.

Who You Are

Technical Foundation (Required):

  • Technical Depth: 10+ years in software engineering and/or AI research, with a proven ability to build production-scale systems. Hands-on proficiency in Python, SQL, CI/CD pipelines, and AI powered coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor). Relevant applied knowledge of Data Science.

  • AI Systems & Architecture: Experience building LLM-powered systems (agent frameworks, RAG, multi-model orchestration) and deep knowledge of modern AI architectures.

  • Responsible AI Expertise: Proven track record in evaluation science, adversarial testing (red teaming), and designing systematic defenses against bias, hallucination, and other RAI risks.

  • A related technical degree required.

Strategic & Leadership Excellence:

  • Senior Management: 5+ years managing technical teams (engineers, researchers, data scientists). Strong performance management and operational excellence.

  • Executive Influence: Demonstrated ability to translate complex technical/ethical narratives into strategic business goals for executive stakeholders.

  • Ambiguity Management: Comfort charting direction in high-ambiguity environments, using data to make pragmatic tradeoffs between ambition and deliverability.

Why This Matters

  • Industry Impact: You will influence how the entire tech industry approaches responsible agentic AI, setting patterns and frameworks that may become standards.

  • Technical Innovation: You will operate at the frontier of agentic AI safety, combining cutting-edge capabilities like LLM-judges, mechanistic interpretability, run-time protections, and adversarial red teaming with rigorous evaluation science.

  • High-Visibility Transformation: You are leading a career-defining shift in how a major enterprise practices ethics, with the mandate, resources, and executive support to succeed.

In office expectations are 36 days/a quarter to support customers and/or collaborate with their teams.
